Scientist Hadiz Tambuwal is looking for a solution to her own Earth’s environmental collapse when she stumbles across the secret of inter-dimensional travel, a secret that could save everyone on her dying planet. It leads her into the middle of a war on a scale she never dreamed of. And she needs to choose a side before every reality pays the price.

Sentients on every world have this moment when they think intelligence is what separates them from the rest of creation. It takes them a lot longer to figure out that they’re arguing from the very heart of survivor bias, and therefore underestimating the importance of blind, brute chance.Highlighted by 138 Kindle readers

Review
"The plot doesn’t map onto a traditional hero’s journey arc and feels all the fresher for it. Short, action-packed chapters keep the pace brisk, and each character we meet, however briefly, is vividly and empathetically drawn. A genuine treat for SF fans: an epic multiverse tale that moves like a thriller."―Kirkus (Starred Review)
"Infinity Gate, with its in-depth science and rich characterization, is a must-read for sf fans."―Booklist (Starred Review)

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024This book is a science-fiction gem. It addresses multiple themes: parallel worlds, convergent evolution, machine sentience/artificial intelligence, and other topics. I don't want to give too much away, but if you are a fan of the TV show Sliders, or similar works, you will really enjoy this book. Honestly, a very good science fiction book could have been written focusing on any one of half-a-dozen themes in this book. . .and not all of the themes are even science fiction. It addresses the issue of chattel slavery, bondage, involuntary servitude, Post-Traumatic Shock Disorder, and much more. It speaks of an apocalypse, of what technology could do . . .again, I don't want to give away too much, but parts of this book reminded me of the film The Day After, Alas Babylon, and so forth. The way it starts, it seems like a pretty basic premise, and then it draws you in, adding different characters and themes, and grows into something wholly unexpected. It's a thrill ride, and comes highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024There were some aspects of the way this story was put together that I struggled with early on, but it comes together nicely by the end of the book and the author leaves a nice cliffhanger to be resolved in the second half of this duology.
M. R. Carey is an excellent writer. He creates intriguing and interesting characters, builds worlds in his multiverse that make sense and fit the plot line well, and keeps the action moving along.
This story is really unique, with multiple ‘Earths’ and some intriguing ideas about A.I. and consciousness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024Great read in the Blade Runner genre. Excellent writing and a wickedly twisted plot!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2024This is an interesting and complex science fiction book. The big idea is that there are infinite worlds parallel to ours (or, to each other). The idea depends on a mechanism to move between parallel worlds. Each world is a copy of this one which may have evolved differently. Some near adjacent worlds are quite similar, others are more distant worlds that have evolved differently. It is my understanding that moving between these parallel worlds does not move one in time ( either backwards or forwards) and does not move one to other places (like Mars, or another solar system) but to a parallel “earth” and generally in the same physical coordinates.
On some more distant parallels, evolution played out differently with rabbits, cats, other animal types evolving sentience rather than humanoids.
I found it interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024Great story and quickly moving plot. Interesting analysis of what constitutes consciousness and self-hood. Definitely let the path remains open for sequels.
No matter how the appearance of an alien is described, the protagonist always comes across as human to me. Easier to see aliens as other if they are malign I guess.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2024Excellent story employing the multi-world theory of quantum mechanics. That being said, the author shows very good literary skills and great imagination. I hope the next books in this series will be as interesting as this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2023Look. The world-building is good. First truly effective multiverse world building. The first descriptions of the mechano- civilization are excellent and unnerving. Many of the characters are memorable.
Now for the "buts":
A little slow at times and given the page count, more could have happened. Sometimes reads like a Young Adult book. (Or IS IT a YA book and i missed that??). The ending literally is in the middle of a moment, as if Carey just put the pen down and said "ok, done for now" but didn't finish a thought. Probably won't bother with the sequels because this was so irritating an end. Immediately forgotten.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2024It's a really great read. I really enjoyed the originality of the plot line, and the overall story telling is very well done.
But I did occasionally find myself wishing he didn't take so many sideways steps in this characters and get back to the central plot. It was rare, but I did skip over some parts just to move the story along.
Still, highly recommended. Looking forward to the next part.

AndyReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 8, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Another great story from a terrific author
The concept of parallel worlds is nothing new but there are definitely some well thought out plot lines and some plausible contexts. The author has a narrative style that pulls you immediately and never lets go again. The main characters behave believably even in the most unbelievable situations. They are certainly quite a dysfunctional collection of misfits, but mostly quite endearing despite their shortcomings.
I thought the book was great and can’t wait to get my hands on the second instalment.

HowSenReviewed in India on June 10, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Great new series from Mike Carey
Been a fan of Carey's since his brilliant Lucifer series. He was writing about multiverses before the notion went mainstream and Marvel glommed on to the idea and stuck it in every dang movie.
This is a well-written, propulsive series, with unusual characters that include my fave Moon Sostenti, descendent of cats and soldier beyond compare. So looking forward to the next one.
