This book is a science-fiction gem. It addresses multiple themes: parallel worlds, convergent evolution, machine sentience/artificial intelligence, and other topics. I don't want to give too much away, but if you are a fan of the TV show Sliders, or similar works, you will really enjoy this book. Honestly, a very good science fiction book could have been written focusing on any one of half-a-dozen themes in this book. . .and not all of the themes are even science fiction. It addresses the issue of chattel slavery, bondage, involuntary servitude, Post-Traumatic Shock Disorder, and much more. It speaks of an apocalypse, of what technology could do . . .again, I don't want to give away too much, but parts of this book reminded me of the film The Day After, Alas Babylon, and so forth. The way it starts, it seems like a pretty basic premise, and then it draws you in, adding different characters and themes, and grows into something wholly unexpected. It's a thrill ride, and comes highly recommended.

Infinity Gate is told through different character vignettes focusing primarily on three very different characters. Those characters in question: scientist Hadiz Tambuwal, rogue Essien Nkanika, and rabbit Topaz Tourmaline FiveHills.✨✨Infinity Gate is my first book by M.R. Carey and my first foray into a more intense Science Fiction book. As with most books that focus on multiple characters, there are favorite and least favorite arcs. I, personally, have a STEM background, which is likely why of all the characters, I enjoyed Hadiz’s arc the most. I really enjoyed the depth of science included in her arc. Unfortunately Essien had my least favorite arc mainly due to his infuriating choices. I found the interactions between Hadiz, Essien, and their associates AI friends really interesting. It’ll be interesting to see how that continues to play out in the next book. The story plot is interesting from a review perspective. It was fast paced and kept the story progressing. However, you could also tell that it’s a set up plot for the next book especially with how they wove the different character backstories together. From a story element perspective, the main themes throughout Infinity Gate were: multiverses, sentience, and artificial intelligence as well as how they’re wrapped up in the ethics of the various viewpoints. Ultimately, I believe the book is enjoyable and worth continuing on to see where Hadiz, Essien, and Topaz end up relative to the Pandominion, Ansurrection divide.
