This pen was for a town office and was highly recommended by another town office. Configuration wasn't very easy as there were a lot of options to try with not a clear explanation of what each did. There was also a lot of trial and error on this as you have to scan across the barcode at the right speed. Too slow or too fast and you end up trying again and again until it finally takes. Personally I think a scanner that would read the whole barcode at once like you see in some convenience stores would be better.

(Original review)
It does work....but not very well. I have several other (much cheaper) barcode scanners which work much better. It takes about 2-3 sec to scan each barcode, whereas the others (laser and ccd) take about .5 sec. I bought this to scan many small 1d barcodes in proximity to each other, but it really does not work nearly as well as I had expected.

(Updated review)
UPDATE!! After owning this for a few weeks, I must say that it does not read small bar codes very well, but it does read larger codes without any difficulty. I therefore revised the barcodes which I use with this pen by printing them slightly larger and using a code 128 (not the code 39 I was previously using) which allows my to print the barcode slightly larger. I am happy with its performance, and would definately buy this again to read specific barcodes which are close together on a form.

It works. It doesn't require any drivers and works fine on Windows and Linux.

However, because the scan element is moved by hand, it's difficult for this to pick up longer barcodes. UPC symbols? No problem. A few digits in Code39? Easy. But if you're using longer codes that are storing more, it becomes unreliable and you have to scan repeatedly. Also the barcode has to be the right size. If you print large-size codes (for example on a shipping label) it might have trouble reading it.

One advantage of its design is you can exactly pick which code to scan, if there are too many codes near each other. Also it's compact and easily portable. It seems fairly rugged too.

But all in all, if you need to scan longer codes, you would be better with some other type, such as ones that use a laser or CCD.

This product takes some getting used to, however, it operates with Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX without any problems. The device is very portable, so your not stuck typing in 200 hard-drive serial numbers by hand next time your on-site collecting evidence. The device appears as a keyboard, so when you scan something it act as if you typed the data in using the keyboard. The device is configured by scanning different bar codes. I configured the product to be as universal as possible, so I did not need to worry as much about the great variety of bar codes(there are a lot of bar code types). Note, this device does not scan the new 3-D codes used by some shippers. I ended up having to buy bar code printing software (this product does not come with software to generate bar codes).

Great little pen scanner for barcodes. I'm using it to track inventory at our plant and it works very well. Space is limited so I've scaled the font size down quite a bit and it does great job reading the code. I'm surprised at the fine resolution of the unit. Occasionally you have to scan something a couple times but once you get some practice with scanning speed and pen angle, it's isn't a big issue.

We replaced an old pen scanner on a computer at work. It had the old DIN 5 connector that someone eventually put a DIN 5 > PS/2 adapter on it. When the computer was replaced there were no PS/2 (or DIN 5, thankfully!) connectors, only USB. This pen has done a great job and the lady using it has had no troubles.

Scanning accuracy is more than acceptable for $80. Scans 2" long barcodes maybe four out of five times on the first try. Makes an audible beep on a successful scan and inputs the text to the computer as if it were a keyboard input, no drivers required.

For our employees who scan patient barcodes throughout the day, this will do the trick.
