Information Architecture: For the Web and Beyond 4th Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Information architecture (IA) is far more challenging―and necessary―than ever. With the glut of information available today, anything your organization wants to share should be easy to find, navigate, and understand. But the experience you provide has to be familiar and coherent across multiple interaction channels, from the Web to smartphones, smartwatches, and beyond.
To guide you through this broad ecosystem, this popular guide―now in its fourth edition―provides essential concepts, methods, and techniques for digital design that have withstood the test of time. UX designers, product managers, developers, and anyone involved in digital design will learn how to create semantic structures that will help people engage with your message.
This book includes:
- An overview of IA and the problems it solves for creating effective digital products and services
- A deep dive into IA components, including organization, labeling, navigation, search, and metadata
- Processes and methods that take you from research to strategy, design, and IA implementation

From the Publisher
Audience for This Book
Who do we hope to reach with this fourth edition of the polar bear book? Because we assume that any interactive product contains information, this book is for anyone who’s responsible for defining how interactive products and services work: user experience designers, product managers, developers, and more. The job titles don’t really matter; what matters is that your work results in products and services that are interactive, information dense, and used by at least one person besides yourself. Previous editions of the book delved into the subject of information architecture as a career path. We have eschewed these discussions in the fourth edition in favor of treating information architecture as an area of practice. You do not need to have the words “information architect” on your business card in order to benefit from the ideas in this book.
Organization of This Book
This book is divided into 3 parts and 13 chapters, progressing from abstract fundamental concepts to processes, tools, and techniques you can use to put them into practice. It breaks down as follows.
- Part I, “Introducing Information Architecture,” provides an overview of information architecture for those new to the field and experienced practitioners alike.
- Part II, “Basic Principles of Information Architecture,” presents the fundamental components of an architecture, illustrating the interconnected nature of these systems.
- Part III, “Getting Information Architecture Done,” covers the conceptual tools, techniques, and methods to take you from research to strategy & design to implementation of an information architecture.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2022I read the first edition, which helped me tremendously when I was thrown into a Knowledge Management role 10 years ago. I'm so glad I am revisiting now. The updates are tremendously helpful. In my mind, a "must read" for anybody who is asked to
- build out an Intranet - because SharePoint or something similar is already available (used for file sharing), and it's easy, right? How do you now create something robust where users find what they are looking for?
- go from developing software that deals with data entered by users and that is stored in a database to designing software that can "also" deal with content such as text on page, files, links, and all that other "stuff"
- organize our documentation better and make it more accessible - we have a shared drive where files are hidden in 6 levels of folders, and people are struggling to find what they are looking for
- go from "training" to a more comprehensive "learning" ecosystem - where courses are complemented with job aides, articles, and other content that now needs to be curated and presented in a learner-friendly way
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2022The content is really good and important to understand how to organize information to users on UX design. The book is a little bit big, around 470 pages.
The condition that came is really nice, I was hoping less because was tagged like "Aceptable" condition, but is in really good condition.
A good buy! :)

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020The classic polar bear book! I was late to read this, but was delightfully surprised at the modern nature of the 4th edition's content. It was fun to read the author's commentary on the evolution of the field of IA and I was able to fill in some big knowledge gaps on content in UX from classic sitemaps, search semantics, and even reports to the client. The parts on research are shallow (intended), but otherwise I would recommend this as a solid foundational read on content strategy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2018It would be interesting hearing how this book is rated by students. This book reminds me of its origins, written by consultants who have learned best practices and would like to share their experience with other practitioners. And that is why I gave it 5 stars. I would not think this book could be used in an introduction to information architecture. Especially after graduating in computer science.
This book is much more for practitioners on their first project or wanting to improve their existing methodology with new ideas. I found the book to follow exactly the process we have on my first project. Even anticipating the same questions I asked regarding waterfall versus agile. The whole book betrays the author's as experienced practitioners. And that is a good thing.
Initially, I hesitated to purchase the book thinking it would be too focused on e-commerce sites, and I am working on a government intranet site with records management. However, the steps to developing a successful IA were presented in an industry agnostic perspective. Examples were taken from both government and public corporation websites.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019I understood the fundamentals to improve the AI in websites, I've read this book a week, its very useful and I recommend 100% for the web designers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2016Pretty great book about information architecture. If you build websites and don't know what information architecture is, I'd recommend reading it.

BeigsReviewed in Canada on November 27, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know for the basics of IA
Wonderfully written - I find the fourth edition easier to read than the third. The information is written less for specific examples and more on theory that will age well considering how quickly technology changes.

Quale che sia il nostro lavoro questo libro aiuta a comprendere quasi tutti gli aspetti relativi alla gestione delle informazioni. La lettura è molto lunga ed articolata ma è una fatica che vale la pena di affrontare.
