The one thing that makes me remove a star is that the minimum focal distance is too large for use in electronics. The field of view is something like a 50 mm lens on a 35 mm camera, and for short focal distance a wider angle is better. Look at the first picture, which is a combination of visual and thermal image (offset, due to the short distance). The PCB is 12.7 mm wide (1/2") and you can see that an 8-leg component is warm, but the image is very blurry. If the hot component had been a 0805 right next to other components of the same size, it's not likely that one could make out which was the hot one. With a thermal imager with good close-distance resolution, you can not just see which component is warm, but you an even see where the chip is inside the component since only the chip gets warm.

For all other uses the HT-04 is fine, though. Since it has 220x160 pixel resolution, and a field of view like a "normal" lens on a camera (see selfie), it gives enough detail to see people at probably up to 100 m. The third photo is at about 50 m, and incidentally, you can see where a car and boat trailer was parked during the day, leaving the asphalt several degrees cooler.

The mixing of visible and thermal may or may not be useful, but I include 5 images so you can see. One can select different color scales for the thermal, and in this case I selected the default colorful one, since the visual is mostly shades of gray. The choices seem to be 100% thermal, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0%. Use the left and right arrows to vary the mixing ratio.

The manual does not mention batteries, you have to pull the cover off downwards on the handle and insert 4 AA alkaline cells. When you press ON nothing happens, but that's because you have to keep pressing it for like 5 seconds (!) before it will turn on. The same when turning it off, it is a very long press.

The manual lacks certain information. For instance it does not mention that if you press the trigger to take a photo then a dialog opens and to save it you can just click again, but to discard it you have to press "Select".

This device allows the user to select the emissivity value (e=0.95 as default). To illustrate the importance I took two pictures of an aluminium block on a hot stove. In the visual image (the glowing iron turned blue in the image for some reason) you see the reflection of the glow in the Al block. The same reflection is seen in the IR image, while the top of the Al block seems cold enough to touch. I poured a little water on it and is sizzled away in seconds; it is burning hot, but aluminium has a low emissivity value why it reflects heat rather then absorb/emit heat. The cold temperature you see is the reflection of the cold ceiling of the room. As the emissivity decreases from 0.95 (95%) the rest is made up by reflection, so it is impossible to accurately determine the temperature when the emissivity is much below 95%. This is not a fault of this device, but it is misleading marketing to claim that you can put it to let's say 30% and get a useful reading.

On the other hand, as a thermal imager this device is fine. It always does contrast stretch over the temperature range in view. There are many possible uses for it. You'll be amazed at what you can discover when you roam the neighborhood at night.
