Another gorgeous Taschen book. Chockfull of great photos and text, beautifully designed and a must-have for Bergman fans. These Archive books are huge, heavy, a bit unwieldy, but stunning. Get it before the price goes through the roof.

Like the STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES that Taschen put out before it, the INGMAR BERGMAN ARCHIVES gives us a fascinating look into the creative mind of one of the world's cinematic geniuses. Full of material that I've never seen before (and I'm a Bergman fanatic!), this heavy tome has it all--stills, background, script excerpts, chronologies, you name it. And the souvenir film strip from "Fanny & Alexander" and the DVD of Bergman's home movies are icing on the cake! Worth every penny.

Considering the materials and methods, this is a five star production by the editors and contributors for freshness, depth, and synchrony.

This is the most paradoxical book I've ever encountered:
As a fan of Ingmar Bergman's work and life, this book is the greatest resource imaginable, and I am strongly attracted to it--highest rating for the contents.
But the physical design/construction are the most miscalculated I've ever seen. The FIRST TIME I read the book (propped up on a tilt-top tray table), the front cover tore 9" down the inside. I assume that the same thing will happen to the rear cover when I near the end. I am a careful person, but by the time I finish reading this book, it's going to be in a shambles. Adequate cloth binding on the inside of the covers was obviously needed.
Didn't the designer do any user-testing?
Perhaps this title should have been in two or three volumes. In one volume, it is too heavy and awkward to be read comfortably. If flat on a table, it needs to be read at an angle--inconvenient. At about 14 pounds, it's way too heavy to rest on one's lap. I say: either normal format and heavy weight OR oversize format and light weight but NOT oversize format and heavyweight.
What an egregious mix of pros and cons in this book!

This massive book is a must-have for anyone interested in the works of Ingmar Bergman. Not only is there a thorough examination of each of his films, but there's also information about his work in the theatre and TV productions. There are extensive interviews with Bergman and those around him, ranging from major figures like Liv Ullmann and Sven Nykvist to lesser known figures who played a role in his life and work. The photographs in the book, especially some of the large ones (roughly 16" by 11.75"), have to be seen to be appreciated.
The accompanying DVD includes fascinating behind the scenes looks at films ranging from The Seventh Seal and Sawdust and Tinsel in the 1950s to his recent, final film Saraband. Also included is a film strip from Fanny and Alexander that was played in Bergman's theatre on Faro. (Mine contains 12 frames!)

Majestic, magnificent tome on the art and life of Ingmar Bergman. I cannot recommend this highly enough. 5 stars seems completely inadequate for something as breath-taking as this (and it will, literally, take your breath away). A treasure for all time! It really doesn't get any better than this!
