“Sounds of the Season” contains 12 of the most essential songs to celebrate the holidays during Christmas and up to New Year’s. Indeed, there are the most memorable tunes that Michaelson has kept true to their rhythm and rhyme that hearkens to the 1940s and 1950s and sung in the tradition of Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald, or even Judy Garland “Looks Like a Cold, Cold, Winter,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” -- very much similar to Garland's version in the film “Meet Me in St. Louis,” the enchanting duets “White Christmas” (with Christina Perri), “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (with Will Chase), and then there are the most revering and sentimental renditions of contemporary classics The Peanuts' Christmas or Vince Guaraldi's “Christmas Time is Here,” and Mariah Carey’s "All I Want for Christmas Is You” (with Leslie Odom, Jr.), Auld Lang Syne, and “What are You Doing New Year's Eve?" And with the time of the season there are the giddy and novelty tunes Robert Alexander Anderson’s “Mele Kelikimaka” (with Allie Moss and Bess Rogers) made famous by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters and many others, and what would a Christmas album be like without “Rockin’ Around the Chrismas Tree” (with Grace Vanderwaal) and “Let It Snow, Let It Snow”? In addition, to top off the record Michaelson has an original “Happy Happy Christmas."
Whether one enjoys the quintessential classic melodies or more recent ones, there is bound to be favorites to play all through the season.
Many artists who release a Christmas album feel the need to update the songs to connect to contemporary audience. Ingrid took things in the exact opposite direction, and the album shines even brighter for it. The instruments and arrangements sound like they could have been pulled straight out of the 1950's. Far from sounding dated, Ingrid has managed to make these classic songs sound classier than ever. The one song that got a major update from the original is 'All I Want For Christmas Is You.' Instead of an upbeat pop tune, it's been slowed to a beautiful pace perfect for a slow dance with your special someone.
The only possible misstep in the album is 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.' You can hear in Ingrid's voice that she definitely had a good time recording it, and there's nothing wrong with her rendition - it's just that the song really feels out of place next to the other songs, which are more reserved.
I think my favorite song on the album is 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve.' Even though it was originally written in 1947, Ingridmakes it sound like it was written specifically for her, as she infuses it with a nervous timidity that is both perfect for the song and reminiscent of her earlier albums.
I have a feeling Ingrid will be getting a lot of air time on the Christmas music stations this year. She has knocked it out of the park with this release.

That's the one word I have to use to describe this Christmas release from "Ingrid Michaelson" titled "Songs For The Season."
Ingrid takes you back to Christmas of long ago, the style and mood of Christmas music back in mostly the 1950's but also the 1960's. There is a bit more of a modern day touch in a song or two as well as the guest vocalists but overall, this cd is very much like a classic Christmas album from the 1950's including the front cover photo and also the back cover photo on the cd which are so awesome. Ingrid's voice, unlike a couple of the guest vocalists, does indeed sound like a female singer from back in the day of the 1950's. It's just fantastic.
And don't worry, despite a couple of modern touches that I mentioned, the old time flow and feel of the cd does not get tarnished. If you like the classic Christmas sound and albums by people such as Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, etc..... I'm pretty sure you will love this Ingrid Christmas recording as well. It's just that great and my favorite Christmas recording in years (and that despite some great recent ones). I'm even going to go as far and say that this is one of my favorite Christmas recordings ever, from any year and decade. I just can't stop listening to it.
From what I understand, Ingrid used a real orchestra here with brass and strings (I read somewhere that it was 35 piece orchestra) whereas most people these days seem to use "fake" orchestra sounds from a keyboard or something. So the sound here is as real as the Christmas recordings from the 1950's. And to add to that, a real chorus of singers are also used here, again, just like back in the 1950's.
The packaging is great, too, with a booklet inside with the lyrics to all the songs, I did not expect that. Wonderful addition to this most awesome cd.
Every song is great. No need to skip one to get to the next good one.
The cd opens with "Looks like A Cold, Cold Winter" which is upbeat with an old time, 1950's big band brass sound. Really, really, awesome. "White Christmas" follows with more wonderful 1950's nostalgic sounding music, but this time with a lot more of a tame, laid back sound with very lush and deep sounding strings. And an absolutely wonderful, almost hypnotic drum sound complementing perfectly the deep and lush string sound pops in after a few moments of the solo string beginning. And the instrumental orchestra and chorus solo in the middle or so of the song where the chorus "hum" rather than sing words, is absolutely fabulous. It's like listening to something back in the day I keep talking about, the 1950's. "let It Snow!, Let It Snow!, Let It Snow!" is next and once again, the 1950's sound is alive and well in another very upbeat and lively offering. The Chorus really shines on this number as does the backing orchestra (which they really always do).
"Christmas Time Is Here" which shows up later on the cd, has an arrangement and performance I don't think I ever heard, that is, I can't compare it to another arrangement and performance. It starts with those fantastic 1950's lush, deep sounding strings followed by Ingrid's solo lead and soon followed by another voice or two which joins Ingrid in some very powerful and lively singing. Just spectacular! "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" is another fantastic gem on this album and sounds like something from the 1950's or even the 1960's. Very upbeat and lively, probably the most lively and upbeat on the cd, and has an awesome pounding (in a good way) drum sound again that is a partial highlight of this song just as the drums were a partial highlight on "White Christmas" I mentioned earlier. "Auld Lang Syne" is another standout and makes good use of the chorus later in the song. Ingrid's own "Happy, Happy Christmas," while probably being the most modern sounding song, still fits in wonderfully with the rest of the cd and could become a Christmas standard if given enough attention. "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" makes great use of the orchestra that helps set it apart from other versions by other people.
Really, I could talk about every song here as they are all great and wonderful. If you're looking for something new this year in the Christmas music department, something with the classic Christmas sound of so many decades ago, then this receives my highest recommendation! To end this review, I just hope Ingrid records another Christmas cd in the same style as this one.
