The Inheritance Games Kindle Edition
Don't miss this New York Times bestselling "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets—perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.
Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.
To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
**The games continue in The Hawthorne Legacy, The Final Gambit, and The Brothers Hawthorne!

After the untimely death of her mother, Avery Grambs is scrambling to keep her high-school life. (Part of the time she lives in her car.) An estate attorney announces that billionaire Tobias Hawthorne died and left everything to Avery. There’s a catch: to claim the money, Avery must relocate to Texas and live in the Hawthorne mega-mansion for a year – with a pack of frustrated Hawthorne heirs. What could go wrong?
A funny page-turner with lots of treasure-hunt gimmicks.

I can't give it five stars though because the center of this book is the puzzles themselves and the puzzles were blah. Quite a few of them I understood before Avery did. Worst though was the giant ending twist. Because I saw that coming from like page 1. Takes the fun out of it.
But also, all along the way there were people who had answers to many of the story quesitons. Rather than tell Avery they just strung things along, the author often cutting of a scene right at the big moment so that Avery and the reader got a taste of an answer but not the real answer. As a form of story tension, I find this annoying and manipulative, not engaging.
Still, I'm going to get the second book.

This whole series is very well written, I enjoy Jennifer Lynn Barnes' writing. It has just the right amount of tension, and romance, and thrill.
I loved all of the Hawthorne brothers, each one with very different personalities, slowly but surely, as you read, I'm sure you'll pick your favourite.
It's a YA book, so no spice, but there is romance - along with everyone's favourite, a love triangle!
I really enjoyed this and will reread it again and again, I don't think I could ever get bored.
I can't say much else without spoiling Tobias' tricks, however, I know that this is a book that you'll love!

The Inheritance Games is the first book in a trilogy following Avery Grambs who has inherited a billion dollar fortune from a man she has never met before. After her mother's death, Avery had been living in her car and sometimes with her sister Libby and we meet her as she is approached by strangers and told she's needed to attend the reading of the will of Tobias Hawthorne. At the reading, it is revealed she's now the heiress of a multi billion dollar inheritance with the catch being that she needs to live in a mansion for 12 months and must allow the family of the late Tobias to reside there too, including his four grandsons. The house itself is huge with secret passageways, different wings, a bowling alley, theatre, library's etc and Avery can't believe it's all been left to her by someone she's never met. Avery and the grandsons of Tobias are all left with a letter from Tobias with a cryptic message that they must all decipher.
As I said, I had low expectations for this book which is why I enjoyed it so much I think. It wasn’t an amazing read but I was on holiday when I read it and it was a perfect quick read for that (I read it in a few hours). Avery as a character was fine, I think she probably needed a bit more fleshing out, we are made to believe that she is genius level but we never really get that I think. The love triangle storyline was not great to be honest. Avery barely spent any time with the boys but is in love with them anyway, it was also very predictable. The boys themselves were fine but also nothing new really. I was intrigued by Nash and I expect we will find out more about him as the series progresses. I enjoyed the puzzles and the twists, these were very clever.
Overall, a good holiday read but nothing groundbreaking. I’ll probably pick up the rest of the series at some point.
