5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Gothic ghost story!

Inheriting her Ghosts had everything I yearn for in a gothic ghost story, and a whole lot more. It is steeped in historical detail, subtly swept onto the page, enough for the reader to be thoroughly submerged in the era.

The story follows Eudora Fellowes, a strong-minded, independent woman living outside the boundaries of Victorian values, unwed and headstrong. When Eudora hears of her great-aunt's death, she leaves her childhood home and the memories of lost departed parents, to live in her ancestral home of High Hearth, a seaside manor. Eudora is soon faced with the reality of the dark legacy her estranged great-aunt has left behind...

Written with an air of a classic Victorian tale, Inheriting her Ghosts delivers a veritable feast of the macabre, with sinister twists and turns, and the perfect ending fitting for this sublime Gothic ghost story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eudora is a Masterpiece

“Inheriting Her Ghosts” is a must-read for anyone who is bored of the stereotyped-heroine archetype. Eudora Fellows is someone you know, her words and actions are palpable, believable, and relatable. Devilishly and politely snarky, with the quiet fortitude and strength to back it up, she encapsulates the “forgotten-woman” stereotype that still pervades to this day. The unmarried, the “unremarkable”, the childless, Eudora Fellows takes all those terms—some of which can, and have, been used as insults—and shoves them right where the sun doesn’t shine. There is a strong possibility that you know and love a Eudora in your life. As characters go, she is a masterpiece gracing the page.

There is a strong theme of loyalty throughout this work. Loyalty to duty, to family, to society, to propriety, and most of all to ones-self. “Inheriting Her Ghosts” acknowledges that loyalty is most often a double-edged sword, both a blessing and a curse at times. The theme is upheld throughout, by various characters, all of which offer unique perspectives and actions upon the term.

It would be an extreme disservice to not give a solid shout-out to two gem characters: Cerberus and Black Shuck, who are arguably two of the best supporting animal-characters to feature throughout the entirety of a piece that I’ve encountered. Anyone can throw a pet dog or cat into a story; it takes skill to have them leaping off page to sit beside you while you’re cozied up reading about their exploits.

I wish that I could contact my A.P. English teacher from high school to give her a copy of this book. I feel like Eudora could hold her own next to Havisham and Eyre and deserves her place amongst them. So, if you’re a fan of Brontë and Dicken’s famously creepy works, you should give “Inheriting Her Ghosts” a whirl. Guarantee it becomes your new favorite.
