"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Eden is still learning what it means to be a witch and learning to deal with the darkness inside her. Her biggest fight is with herself and wanting to rid herself of all the darkness. She is fortunate to have some great sisters in her sorority who support her and help her to practice her skills. There are other sisters in the sorority who are not so supportive but they made that choice and I hope in future books there will be more about them.
Christina Garner is talented. She takes an imaginary world and brings it to life. Her characters are realistic and interesting. I liked the college setting and the reactions of the characters were true to the college life. Decisions were made that weren’t the smartest but they were lessons learned, friends were trusted that shouldn’t have been but again that is the way of the world, and friendships were made that will last forever.
Thank you Christina Garner for a copy of your book in exchange for an honest review.
And as a followup to Pledge, Initiate did NOT disappoint. The relationships (both romantic and platonic) were deepened, as was each character's stories. The first half of the book really focused on that. And then? Stuff got crazy.
The last half of Initiate was a seriously intense roller coaster ride. Like Pledge, there were plenty of twists and no character is safe. Which kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time (and also may or may not have made me cry on more than one occasion haha). I cancelled a lunch date with someone that day just because I couldn't bring myself to put the book down! So a good word of advice would be not to make any plans in the few days after you start reading Initiate. You'll just end up pushing them off anyway!
Favorite part: Christina Garner puts a lot of effort into developing the book's side characters. This is something that not many young/new adult authors do. And it makes any time one of those characters is lost (spoiler alert?) just as hard as it would if one of the main characters died.
Least favorite part: Having to wait for the next book!
