I liked the story overall, and it was fast-paced, but there were a few things I didn’t like, but it wasn’t enough to change my enjoyment. I didn’t like the instant love aspect of the story with Zander. Without giving too much away, I felt that it was too easy, and it made me suspicious of him the entire time, which had me disappointed when nothing came to fruition with my suspicions. I would have also liked to have seen more done with the action scenes. They went by too quickly, and I thought Ruby, with her power, could have done more. As a Sender who is supposed to be really powerful, she didn’t kick as much butt as I’d have liked. I hope that’ll change as the series continues. I look forward to what is to come.
If you like stories of magic, good versus evil, ghost stories, and themes of self discovery, you’ll enjoy the Initiation. I highly recommend it.

Ruby doesn’t really show any special abilities but she does seem to be a natural in whatever she tries. I was kind of disappointed that good guys and bad guys were so neatly categorized that it didn’t leave any room for suspense and intrigue. Not much happened in this book. I was hoping for more action.
This book is described as fast paced teen romance and adventure but it wasn’t much romance, just Ruby and Zander talking about their feelings so openly that I was rolling my eyes. Teenagers don’t talk like that. Their relationship was over exaggerated for the amount of time they supposed to know each other. I don’t know where the adventure and the fast pace was either. They might be waiting in the sequel.
