What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat ? Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts as a bold new fighting game franchise that introduces a deep, original story featuring favorite DC Comics icons such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy and others. I was not disappointed.
As a long time DC Comics fan and a fan of fighting games, this game appealed to me from the first time I had heard of it. I haven't played many adult themed games over the last few years (We owned a regular Wii during that time). But this game rekindled my love for fighting games such as Mortal Kombat (no surprise since Injustice was developed by MK's creators) and Street Fighter II.
The story mode is actually interesting and well written. It only takes a few hours to complete the story mode but that's not the main reason for the game. The main reason is to fight and fight some more. The story mode simply gives you some background as to why the heroes and villains all fight one another.
The gameplay is fluid and the graphics are top-notch. I was a little worried when I saw some trailers about this game for the Wii U. They looked like they would not be as detailed as the Xbox or Playstation. Thankfully, it looks as if those trailers were showing unfinished graphics.
The replay value is high. Whether you play against friends, or online, there is always someone who is better than you (well, better than me at least!). This makes you want to master your character and get to the top of the online leaderboards. (maybe someday!)
The only major drawback to this game, at least in the Wii U version, is that there is no downloadable content. The official Twitter account of the game says the content available to the other systems will be available in summer. So, I have a while to save the forty or so dollars its going to cost to buy the new characters and costumes.
I love the look and feel of the game. The reimagining of so many of my favorite comic book characters is amazing. I loved what they did with the characters designs so much that I purchased the strategy guide just to have the production art pictures in the book. (and to hopefully win a few more online matches! Those guys online are seriously tough!)
I don't really care about the no-friend online gameplay, because I don't personally know anyone who plays this game, but it sucks that this version has some slipshod presentation. You can tell overall they could have done a much better job integrating Wii U features with the gamepad, Miiverse, and touch screen in the menus. That really sucks, enough to take away 1 star, but the gameplay is still fun as hell so I give it a solid 4 stars.
Definitely satisfied with my purchase, however glad I waited for a price drop.
The game itself is pretty good. The one-on-one matches are certainly the highlight of the game. The basic controls are simple enough, but using advanced moves or making combos is difficult to get the hang of, and uncomfortable in your hands at first.
The single player story mode feels more like watching a cartoon than playing a video game. The cutscenes are very long, and when you do play, it's pretty much just a regular match shoehorned into the story.
Unlockable costumes for specific characters are neat, but the game is pretty much "what you see is what you get."
It's incredibly fun, even if story mode goes by all too quickly. I also love playing with friends, even though I kind of suck at anything that requires more hand-eye coordination than Mario Kart or Zelda. It's great playing with the characters I've loved since I was a kid! This game is fairly inexpensive, so I see it as a must have for any console.
