Review

"Poetic. Shockingly Hilarious. Unforgettable. Confidently a 2016 TOP Read!" - The Rock Stars of Romance

"INK & LIES is a beautifully woven story of poetic genius by S.L. Jennings. She provides readers with an inside look of the internal struggle of an author, as well as, an unattainable love story." - Meghan Quinn, author of The Mother Road and The Virgin Romance Novelist

"Speechless is the one word that comes to mine when you ask what this book has in store for you. There are very few books that can leave me at that point but SL has done just that." - Amazon reviewer

"INK & LIES is my first S.L. Jennings book and to say I am blown away is an understatement." - Book Loving Fairy

"Ink and Lies was so different from anything I've ever read. The writing itself was exemplary, and almost poetic... I fell hard for these characters, but fell even harder for her words." - Goodreads reviewer

"INK & LIES is a brilliantly constructed story full of beautifully vivid prose, powerfully evocative words, marvelously vibrant characters, and stomach clenching, gut churning angst." - Nose Stuck In A Book

My first SL Jennings book and I am absolutely blown away. This was a story woven with magic. There are some books that just stand out from the rest and this is one of those. I was laughing, crying, crying with laughter, crying again, then shouting at the characters. Talk about a roller coaster of emotion. And I loved every single minute of it!!

"Patience has no purpose in love stories."

Hope Hughes writes fiction, hot, steamy fiction. Hope is a best selling author. This is incredible for Hope. Except... August is Hope. Yup, you read that right. August Rhys Calloway has a pseudonym. He’s a single writer, who lives with his cat, and he is taking the literary world by storm with his steamy romance novels. The only problem is… he doesn’t believe in love, romance, or anything of the sort.

”This… this is me,” he answers. “Giving you my words. Offering you a piece of my soul and hoping you can read my heart between the lines.”

Fiona, or Fi, as August calls her, is his best friend. They met while studying and have been friends ever since. Ten years later, they’re still there. Something is shifting, or has it always been that way? When Fi meets her Mr Right, it ruffles August a lot more than he thought it would. And when he meets Joshua, things go downhill from there.

“I wish you to know that you have been my last dream of my soul.”

Everyone, and I mean everyone is under the impression that August and Fi should be together, except for August and Fi. (This is where the angst and shouting at the characters come in.) Since August doesn’t believe in love, that leaves Fi to ride off into the sunset with Joshua. But does it?

"How could he do this to me?

S.L. Jennings has once again captured me with her latest contemporary romance Ink & Lies. Ink & Lies was so cleverly written from the point view of writer, August. August always knew that he wanted to write, a deep desire for his words to touch and change lives. However the first book he wrote didn't do as well as he would have liked. Instead he became a romance writer, writing under the name of Hope Hughes, yes a woman! Although he was amazing at writing about love, too bad he didn't believe in it. Didn't believe he was destined for it, content with his flavor of the week and his platonic friendship with Fiona. Fiona though, August's best friend for the past ten years did believe in LOVE. Always looking for her HEA, her knight ready to sweep her off her feet.
Fiona's the friend that always believed in August, his biggest fan. She's his muse and he writes for her. Always there for one another through the good and the bad. That's until Fiona gets too rapped up with her new man. August witnesses his best friend changing before his eyes, doing everything to try and fit in the lifestyle of her boyfriend. Fiona feels that she is not worthy of her man, and will and does everything he tells her even when it makes her uncomfortable because she thinks he is "the one." Her HEA. Too bad August doesn't feel the same. When Fiona starts to slip away from him he realizes that he has deeper feelings for Fiona, his Fi. She is perfect just the way she is, that he has always been drawn to her but to stubborn to see it, until now. Will August finally give love a chance and reveal his true feelings? Will Fiona find her HEA? Will August finally write his epic story, as August?
I love friends to lovers romance stories, and S.L. Jennings hit it on the head!

SPOILERS

I wanted to like this book. I tried but I ended up being disgusted with myself for even attempting to finish it. As the title of this review states it's another "I love you but sleep with every other woman" type story. There is nothing new here but the book is infinitely worse because the sex scenes between him and the other women (and there are A LOT of them) is detailed. Yep, I got to read about him pushing into another woman's body over and over again.

The H is an ass. He loves his best friend but has sex with multiple other women. Then gets mad at her when she moves on from him. I wanted to punch him and throw my kindle. I'm honestly surprised I finished it and the only reason I did was because I wanted to read the scene when he realized what an ass he had been the whole time. Well, I should have just stopped because that moment never happened. That right, there is never that moment where he has any feeling of remorse for his past behavior ( his sleeping with every other woman are the least of his sins..the things he said to Fi were disgusting). He doesn't even chase her! He walks away and SHE has to go after him because apparently the author feels the need to portray women as doormats.

So if you are looking for a love story look somewhere else. I need to bleach my brain after reading this.

I am going to leave an intentionally short review for Ink and Lies. The story has so much that the layers that unfolded within its pages can't be summed up in a few simple words. This story has to be read. The story has to be felt. This story has to be experienced!

S.L. Jennings wrote one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. But Ink and Lies was so much more than a romantically humorous tale with a patented happily ever after. After a laugh out loud (seriously, there are some HILARIOUS moments in this story!) first half, the deeper and more emotional elements begin to emerge. And boy do they ever emerge! Ink and Lies left me on the edge of my seat with its highs and lows. It was artistically beautiful and sweet, but heartbreaking at the same time. This story is a friends to lovers story unlike any other that you will ever read. I didn't know if I was going or coming toward the end, especially when Jennings blended truth and fiction together so seamlessly that it left me breathless. Ink and Lies left me floored by its eloquent beauty.
