Interesting fantasy story with a unique magic system that kept me interested. Overall the world's magic seemed to be fruit that was hanging a little bit too low. The drama and suspense wasn't really built up to be realistic: I just need a tattoo and I can be awesome. I thought it was unique and entertaining, but not really a thought-provoker.
The Kindle Serial format was fun, but I felt like the only thing building the dramatic tension in this book was that I had to wait two weeks for new installments.
With a unique magic system, a somewhat templated-generic fantasy plot, with an easy lay-up of a conclusion (which was almost anti-climactic), the book was a fun read, and I feel that a three-star rating is quite generous for what it is. I enjoy the author's writing style, the way the characters interact with one another, and I look forward to a more substantial novel in this genre from him in the future.
I will admit that the beginning was a bit hard for me to follow, because of all the character POV changes, and some parts where she's on the floor and the next she's standing or she's got her back to someone and yet their yelling at her and their spitting in her face. Other than that, I thought the author did a great job with the characters, building their relationships, and spending time on each one's story, not just the main character.
Also, the author did a GREAT job at describing scenes. At the beginning of the book there was a big event the main character had to live through, and I nearly wept. There was so much detail in the description of what was happening, as well as what the character was feeling, I nearly felt like I was there. You want to root for this girl through the entire book. She has so much crap that she has to go through, but never breaks, never just throws in the towel.
There is a lot I can say about this book, but I will leave you with the important part. GET. THIS. BOOK! It's worth it!!
The training and fight scenes were well written with out a lot of excess gore but enough touches of realism that show that Victor Gischler has studied what he's writing about very well.
The sexual tension is minor and predictable, almost like it was a thrown in afterthought to lead into future tensions for the second and third books.
Well worth buying.
