A Big WARNING that this book ends with a MAJOR cliff-hanger, so if you hate that trend in indie books, be forewarned. In many ways, the ending reminded me of the cliff hanger in the FABULOUS book by Claire Contreras called There is No Light in Darkness (Darkness #1) (Darkness Series). Thankfully, that series was only two books long and hopefully, so will this one.

This is a great story for only .99. 25 year old Inky or Anika is a great character who has been through abuse and survived - with baggage. She has a great life-long friend in Aimes, a boyfriend/fiancé who she has been in love with for 3 years, but only been together with for 2 months and another roommate/friend, Lisa while working as an artist and a bar-tender. The first half of the book is establishing her relationships and setting the suspicion that all is not as perfect as it seems. Inky is happily engaged, she is expressing herself well in her paintings and singing and she feels truly happy. Her best friend Aimes who is normally pretty slutty, is in serious love with a divorcee named Gus, but her other roommate Lisa has been acting bitchy towards her lately and Inky met a hot guy named Cole who helped her through a panic attack and sparks went off between them confusing her feelings towards Evan.

Those of us who have been there, knew what the bitchy roommate/ working out of town at the same time roommate has "gone home" boyfriend really meant, but poor Inky didn't see it coming. Her name Inky is from the large tattoo of an oak tree on her back that represents the bad things that have happened to her but have not knocked her down.

Hmmm... I'm having a difficult time reviewing this one. I may need bullets rather than my normal sad run on sentences to decipher my thoughts or conclusion:

Inky is fantastic.
Aimee's & Gus- THE SHIT!
Rusty & Abe- OMG, who wouldn't want to work for or with those two amazing, kind, loyal and fiercely protective men.
Trish- Perfection.
Antony- Adorable & endearing. I want to steal him as my GBFF & PA.
I very much enjoy the dialogue between characters.
I felt the emotion was very raw and real.

Now Cole-.... I'm with Inky... Something seems to be too good to be true here. Maybe the insta-love was a little too much for me. I'm not sure, I just stayed worried the whole time about what the full story was. Where is that other ChuckTaylor going to land when it falls??

The Lisa/Evan thing I never really got. Why did he ever ask her to marry him if he never wanted to? There was no reason to ask if he didn't want to. So I was scratching my head as to that love triangle?

Not unlike many self-pubs there are a very large number of typos, misspelled words or words missing all together.

Lastly, the ever popular, insanely cruel, ridiculously annoying cliffhanger was unneeded drama IMO. I feel this could have evolved into a wonderful stand alone novel that didn't need the angsty cut off. Why Authors?? Just charge double and write a complete book, or at least one that finds a resolution and leaves readers with a feeling of completion. This "To Be Continued" BS was taken to a whole new level by Sylvia Day w Entwined in You and I'm still pretty bitter from that greedy slap in the face. I just hate it when trickery, marketing ploys and dangled carrots have tainted my favorite & most sacred past time.

Would I recommend it? Honestly, not sure.
Will I read the next book Cole? most likely.
Was it Worth $0.99? Absolutely.

"I heard the door but played the "I'm sexy and sleeping and waiting for you to gaze at my beauty" game. You always see that in romantic comedies and I always imagined how lovely it would be to wake up and have your lover staring at you with nothing but adoration in his eyes."- Inky

"You think I'm like every other guy you've encountered. I'm not. I'm falling in love with Anika Redding. You think I'd let you go that easily?"- Cole

First of all can we talk about the cover for a minute?! NOW I understand that it is a perfect illustration of the author's "vision". However, when I first saw it, I though WOW what a beautiful and amazingly unique cover! I immediately sent J.B. Hartnett a message telling her I obsessed with it must read her book. Thank goodness she didn't think I was some crazy stalker - well - maybe she did but she didn't say so. ;-) You have this beautiful girl with a very unique tattoo on her back of a tree, standing in a gilded frame looking upon gorgeous sunset with water lapping at her feet. Yet there is a dark gray stormy sky and angry waters overshadowing the picture in that gilded frame. I thought hmmmm - what's that about?

So - I'm smiling as I'm reading this book thinking awww how cute is her name. Awww how sweet is her BFF. Awww how cute they love working together at the local hang out with their way cool boss. Awww she's engaged to Evan who she has loved, played booty call for and waited for while he worked his way through the local female population. Everything is going fabulous right? Until one day a disillusioned but gorgeous business comes into the bar. The sad businessman, well, his name is Cole. Inky may be in love with Evan but Cole has made an impression and is now lingering on her mind whether she wants to admit it or not.
