"You think I'm like every other guy you've encountered. I'm not. I'm falling in love with Anika Redding. You think I'd let you go that easily?"- Cole
First of all can we talk about the cover for a minute?! NOW I understand that it is a perfect illustration of the author's "vision". However, when I first saw it, I though WOW what a beautiful and amazingly unique cover! I immediately sent J.B. Hartnett a message telling her I obsessed with it must read her book. Thank goodness she didn't think I was some crazy stalker - well - maybe she did but she didn't say so. ;-) You have this beautiful girl with a very unique tattoo on her back of a tree, standing in a gilded frame looking upon gorgeous sunset with water lapping at her feet. Yet there is a dark gray stormy sky and angry waters overshadowing the picture in that gilded frame. I thought hmmmm - what's that about?
So - I'm smiling as I'm reading this book thinking awww how cute is her name. Awww how sweet is her BFF. Awww how cute they love working together at the local hang out with their way cool boss. Awww she's engaged to Evan who she has loved, played booty call for and waited for while he worked his way through the local female population. Everything is going fabulous right? Until one day a disillusioned but gorgeous business comes into the bar. The sad businessman, well, his name is Cole. Inky may be in love with Evan but Cole has made an impression and is now lingering on her mind whether she wants to admit it or not. Inky is haunted by her past and particularly the "ghost" of her mother. A woman who should never have had children. Inky's past comes to haunt her and Cole is there to help.
Unfortunately, despite Inky's efforts to bury her past it comes to pay her a visit - literally. WHAM! The smile got wiped off my face quick fast in a hurry when we find out why Anika became Inky. We also find out the significance of the oak tree tattoo that takes up her upper back and shoulder area. That was when the ugly cry started. Totally did not see it coming people. There I was crying on a city bus but I was too invested at that point to care.
Evan feels he and Inky have the real thing going on but Cole is not going away. I think Inky (with her Mommy issues) and Cole (Daddy issues) souls recognized each other and that is why they are drawn together initially.
Inky has all the makings of a great read, even a really good movie, namely: mystery, romance, angst - lots of angst, revenge, dirty little secrets, hot sex, dialogue that stirs the heart and inspires strong emotions. Inky is not your lightweight fluffy cupcake. Instead you get sink your teeth into real storytelling that will draw you in and keep you there until the very last page. Oh! One more thing, it ends on a little cliffhanger but please don't let that stop you. I have it on good authority that J.B. finished the sequel tonight so it shouldn't be much longer for it to be in our greedy little hands.
If you must walk away from your Kindle (as I do on occasion) to prevent you from flinging it across the room, then please do so. DO NOT hurt the innocent Kindle. Of course, I want the sequel like yesterday. It was a 4.5 star read for me. I mean, come one, did you expect ME to say anything different. LOL.
Like I said you know, I wanted the book to either pick up the pace or end and that's why its just an okay read. Inky was kind of bland despite her braveness and colorful name. She was lacking in awesomesauce when made. Her inner monologue said one thing while she went and did another, contradicting herself.
The authors writing as well gives way too much clues as to what is going to come in the story line next. We are able to basically solve any sort of mystery coming our way from chapters before its even posed as a threat. Its all very easy to figure out. The only real thing that shocked me was the cliffhanger but even then we could see that one coming a mile away! The insta-love was also a turn off and not being true to ones self as a whole.
All of the books are well written, with good story flow, good pacing and continuity. There are occasional misspelled words that I suspect are just typos that no one caught. Grammar was good, however, and sentence structure was good so it's easy to overlook the few typos.
The characters are interesting as are their stories and there are some really hot love scenes. I loved Inky's friends and all of the support that she got from them. Cole's a good guy....but I really liked Nico!! I liked that we meet him and learn a lot about him before he gets hooked up with a girlfriend. It really is "his" story, not just his love story. I recommend all 3 of these books.
This book was very deep. I knew when I started this yesterday that I would be left with a cliffhanger. Just didn't think it would be this big of one. I just hope and pray that Papa Joe is not part of the Drago Family.
The tragic pasts that Cole and Inky especially Inky have is so heart-breaking and so sad. I actually cried in a few spots the writer writes with such intensity and passion it's hard not to be swept up emotionally.
One gripe : I wish I'd known there was a cliffhanger before hand it wouldn't have prevented me from buying it but I as an avid reader just like to know these things.
Please write fast cuz that is one hell of a cliffhanger :)

When will authors learn that readers had cliffhangers? The characters weren't nearly what I thought they would be. I just couldn't connect with them
This was a tough one for me to rate. I really, really liked this book and I think I will end up loving this series.Read more
