Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Though Spaniards explored much of the southwestern United States, their accomplishments are often overlooked. Udall, conservationist, former Interior Secretary, and native of Arizona, here seeks to remedy this situation. He describes the expedition of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado from 1540 to 1542 from Mexico through various parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Even today, 80 percent of this area is unmarked by civilization, and the stunning photographs capture the feel of the country as it must have been then. Readable, informative, and visually beautiful, this is highly recommended, especially to public libraries. Kathleen Farago, Lakewood P.L., Ohio

This book by Stewart Udall is the first I have found of the real history of the Spanish role in the settlement of the United States. He uncovers the prejudice that created the Black Legend about the Catholic Spaniards and shows their real contribution to the life, culture and settlement of the Southwest. Udall has no bias as a Catholic or Spaniard--he was neither-- in fact he was a Mormon with nothing to gain by telling the story as it was. He doesn't gloss over Spanish misdeeds, nor does he exaggerate them as most history books have done for the last 100 years.

Arrived in fine shape & promptly. Have only read the first chapter but but for anyone with an interest in world history I guarantee you will enjoy it. Word of warning: have a globe handy unless you are a real whiz at geography, the scope goes well beyond the American Southwest!

To the Inland Empire arrived quickly! I found its condition better than just acceptable. Have skimmed it with awe and look forward enthusiastically to a more in-depth reading.
