Purchased this to retrofit a lava lamp switch to add dimming. Pros - easy install with no need to weld and no electrical skills, dimmer works well, price is good. Cons - no strain relief on the cord, so I added large globs of hot glue around the cord where it exits the housing to make it more secure. Most lamps are stranded wire and it can be hard to get a good clamp on it, so be sure to secure it well. The lack of strain relief was the only gripe. If yours isn’t allowing you to get maximum brightness, check the small white dial next to the blue main dial. You can adjust it with a flathead screwdriver to turn it all the way up when the main dial is also turned all the way up. Only do this while unplugged or you risk shock.

Easy Control for my Lava Lights

The external dimmer on a 5 year old lamp started to act flaky, and this was exactly what I was looking for; something I could splice in line to replace the defective dimmer. Install took about 5 minutes. There's no soldering needed - just cut out the old dimmer, strip about 1/8" of insulation off all the wires, insert leads into the new dimmer terminals and tighten the set screws. So far, it's working perfectly.

Installation is a tight fit. Two wires in, two wires out. Don’t expect much. These are real cheap stuff. Be double sure you run the hot and ground correctly or else. After completion of installation one side didn’t dim properly. So no fault of my own but a defective dimmer. I finally out of discuss threw it on the floor. Well what do you know. Now it works.

Have a few accent lamps around my apartment that when all on together create too much light. Installed a few of these and set them at about 30% and everything seems perfect so far. Time will tell on how these hold up but installation was easy as long as you have minimal knowledge of hot and ground and a pair of wire strippers. Theyre a little larger than they appear in the image. I chose to install mine fairly close to the actual plug so its easy to rotate for me. Would buy again if these last.

Good switch that is easy to install. The diagram is pretty clear. The written instructions are useless.

As one reviewer noted, I too, had a flicker that didn't go away anywhere in the adjustment range. The bulb I used was a 60w with an an adjustable color temperature switch. I also had a 40w 3500k bulb that I installed and that eliminated the flicker so if you have that issue, give a different bulb a try.
