I rarely post five star reviews, if only because I often distrust the glowing praise of raving fans, but it would be disingenuous of me to give any fewer than five stars to Barry Brownstein's book. I have read countless books on the topics of leadership and personal growth, but I've not read any that is more thoughtfully conceived. Brownstein draws from numerous other writers and theorists from David Bohm to Dee Houck to paint a picture of leadership that is intelligent, nuanced, and thorough.
Brownstein grounds his exploration of leadership in an understanding that the problems we see in the world and in our work lives are reflections of what we do not understand, not merely in terms of operational intelligence but in terms of grasping realities beyond our momentary limited frameworks. He observes, "At the core of many of our managerial errors is the belief that the problems are outside of us. We mistakenly believe that we are merely passive observers of an external reality, and we think we can fix it." Brownstein challenges leaders to adopt a radically different stance from that of command and control or even empower and support, calling us to get out of the way so that "extreme personal humility" can emerge, enabling us to "engage others, without coercion, in the pursuit of a common purpose."
I strongly recommend "The Inner Work of Leadership" for anyone in a leadership position, and I would interpret that to include entrepreneurs, community workers, parents, and anyone else endeavoring to bring people together for a common purpose.

"Immensely powerful! The Inner-Work of Leadership transcends the traditional boundaries between professional and personal improvement. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

When a brilliant old friend of mine recommended this book to me, I knew it had to be good.
I just finished, and now I know: "good" is an understatement. This is one of the three top leadership books I've ever read, and it surpasses the other two because its lessons will help me be not only a much better leader, but a much better person as well (though I guess I have those two backwards in order of importance!) First there was the shock of realizing the true meaning of the notion of distributed knowledge (which I thought I'd long ago embraced and internalized, having read Hayek, Read and others on the subject): *No, I can't and don't know everything, or anything close to everything, and nor do I have to! In fact, it's best if I don't even try!* Then came the amazing lessons about letting go of the ego and truly focusing on the people around me. The Inner-Work of Leadership proved to be a grab-bag of phenomenal ideas.
Professor Brownstein has inspired me to apply his techniques not only with the people I "lead" from an org chart standpoint, but up the ladder as well, with the leaders above me. Along the way I can recommend they read an inspiring book...
As an aside, I found it intriguing how many of Brownstein's sources and recommended readings were from authors I'd already discovered - not only in the leadership realm, such as Charles Koch (who wrote one of the other two of my favorite leadership books), but much farther afield, including Viktor Frankl, Christopher Alexander, and even Dr. John Sarno! But even with all that previous common discovery, his book tied it all together and gave me one of those rare and valuable moments of, "Of course - it should've been so obvious!" that so often mark the truly groundbreaking.
Thanks so much, Professor Brownstein. You've made my life better. How many authors can ever claim such a thing?

At one time I was told off for writing in the margins of my books my reflections and comments. For myself, the more comments and reflection points I mark the greater my esteem for the the author & book. The Inner-Work of Leadership is full of scribbles, marked quotations, comments to reflect on and I still refer back to it even today.
Another hallmark of a good book for me is the 'Further References' sections and how many of the books and article I follow up. Again, their are still books I am keen to read and of those I have read they have been a gold mine.
My favorite chapter is number 5: Surrendering to the Leader Within."The ego's greatest fear is that we remember we have a mind capable of choosing our True Self at any time; our real power of decision comes from choosing against the ego." Brownstein has a way of revealing the obvious.
This book is not only a lesson about leadership but it a book for living our lives. Wholeness is about living our lives everyday and leadership is for all of us to express no matter where we find ourselves; at work, personal relationships and in life.

I was a student of Professor Brownstein's in several classes at the University of Baltimore. I can assure you, 10 years after graduating, I still return to the lessons learned from him time and again. It is not easy material to master, and you'll spend a lifetime wringing every last drop of wisdom from it, but Barry Brownstein found a way to cut to the core of it. I'm glad I'm still in touch with him a decade later; mentor would be the wrong word, but my life has found new directions in the wisdom I've gained through his teachings. And this really is only the beginning!

This is one of many leadership/management books that I've read. It was the first to resonate with what we all know intuitively. Leadership is more about us, and the health of our personality. Many other books provide some theory or technique to strive. This is the only book that forces us to look inside ourselves. Have you ever struggled with how much to micro-manage? Is there a personality type that delivers good results? Are you micro-managed in your own workplace, but just accept it as status-quo? The Inner-Work of Leadership stands on the premise that leadership is first about dealing with the toxic issues in ourselves and freeing others who depend on you to think and act for themselves. It provides several stories of successful and failing leaders throughout many industries.

I’m not even through it much, but something I read in the first 15 pages clarified something for me that I feel really has changed how I look at things.

An Inside Out Approach to Leadership
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 28, 2013Verified Purchase
This refreshingly easy to read leadership book is a joy. Enjoyable and meaningful examples throughout which flow with the teaching points of the book. In a market swamped with Leadership books this one stands out as it shows how great leadership is possible only by looking inside and not by reading a 'How To' guide. I've already bought it for several of my leadership clients!
