On a different timeline that goes back to the middle to late 1800s, the secrets of the past are revealed. Edgar Porter is a harsh slave owner who can be and is cruel to others, especially who are powerless. Among those secrets are an understanding of the relationships between Master Edgar Portland, his sister Patience, Benjamin, a brother, Lizzy, slave houskeeper and mother of Tandy and the purpose of the beautiful music that Patience composes and plays. Tandy is a slave boy who is later sent away from the farm and mill because of an incident he has witnessed. Tandy is sold to robert Wellston, who unknown to Edgar, is an abolitionist. Johnny is a soldier who was blinded during the Civil War but has been living on the old farm. The story has more than one love story threaded through it. One love involves two people who did not think it possible for the other person to love them. They see themselves as not good enough, as lacking. In a second love story, there are two people -- one damaged and ashamed given her decision as a teenager and the other who does not know her secret. One individual, an old man of color, is the bridge between the two time periods and knows far more than he lets on. This is a very enjoyable story in which the author neatly ties together the lives of people from two different periods and how these interrelate. Goodnight is a masterful story teller!
