On my 2007 Mazda3, this kept reporting a connection error, in 'Accessory' and 'Engine On' positions of the key. After I started the engine, and re-connected, this device was able to read the error codes causing my 'Check Engine' light. It was also able to reset the failure code.
The code will re-occur if not fixed. In my case, a bad gas cap was the culprit, now fixed.
The good thing about this device is that it will work on most any of the newer vehicles. It works on my wife's 2005 Dodge Dakota.
The hard-copy manual that comes with the product is of the "quick start" variety. All it does is give a brief overview of the product, so brief that it's almost useless.
The real owner's manual is on the CD that comes with the product. You can access the owner's manual without installing the software also contained on the CD, but you'll have to drill down thru the file folders on the CD to find the .pdf file of the manual.
The CD tries to install software that you have to go thru to look at the manual. It also apparently installs a driver that allows you to hook the Equus 3030 to your computer via the included USB cable to download the codes to your computer.
The software functions mostly to take you to a website where the output downloaded from your Equus 3030 is analyzed and a diagnosis is rendered. The "free" diagnosis is very basic. The main goal seems to be to up-sell you to their paid online diagnosis service which is promised to be much more comprehensive.
I don't know how comprehensive it is, I didn't sign up for the paid service. It may very well be worth the money.
I found that I could just google on the codes the Equus 3030 shows on its LCD screen to find out what the codes mean and possible causes. If you are confident in your "google-fu", you might be better off doing an online search for the info instead of paying for the service.
If you do decide to install the software, be ready with all the detailed info about your vehicle. The setup asks you for make, model, year, trim level, engine size, VIN, plate # and so on, so be ready with that info.
Bottom line, great product, great value. Software and online diagnosis may be great too if online searching isn't your thing.
I am not too pleased with the online web tool however. All information you enter is forever. (credit cards, name and address, vehicle information) The account you must set up for this cannot be deleted and your information is sold to others. I started receiving junk mail regarding vehicle extended service warranty insurance after setting up the account.
Another impressive point is how sturdy that thing is. We have dropped it, sat on it and left it several times over night in the truck at minus 50F. Still looks and works like new.
I would absolutely buy this reader again should ours finally have enough. Best money spent.
