A little expensive, but worth it in the long run

A little expensive, but worth it in the long run
I'll start by saying this code reader is quite expensive for the features it has, when compared to other brands. That being said, in one way or another, you get what you pay for typically. In this case, Innova quality and reliability has been proven over time. I have used their products for a long time as a professional auto tech. I have also used cheaper versions. I went with this model, because it holds up to abuse, and it functions more smoothly, and faster than the cheaper, say Autel type counter parts. This one I use for quick code pulls, and Readiness Monitor checks, when I dont feel like dragging out the Snap On scan tool and spending several minutes choosing a vehicle, just to pull a code or check monitors. This little code reader will turn itself on when connected to the car, automatically link itself, and within 30 seconds you can see the code, and the readiness monitor status. It will then automatically refresh every 30 seconds, which is perfect for trying to set readiness monitors. The monitors that are ready will be solid, and the ones that aren't will flash until they are ready. Super easy verification after a repair, or when trying to pass state inspection.Another reason I chose this over a cheaper Innova, is because it has code descriptions. The cheaper versions will just give you a code, and you have to actually look up that code to see what it is. Yes eventually you remember the common codes, but for the less common ones, it's a hassle to have to look them up.This scanner moves quickly through its functions, for a cheaper diag tool. The less expensive code readers are slow moving and less responsive. The screen is very bright, and easy to read. I use this tool just about every day at work, and have yet to run into a car it won't pull codes from. It may not identify every car, but it will still pull the codes from it.ABS feature: So there are many negative reviews about the fact that the code reader claims to read ABS, yet it doesn't work on certain cars. Well yes, this is TRUE. You cannot pull ABS codes on every car with this scanner. BUT come on guys, it clearly states the makes of cars that it works with. If your make is not on that list, then this tool will NOT pull your ABS codes. For the cars that are on the list, make sure you update the code reader when you get it, to allow it to communicate with newer year models, as they are released.Innova Repair Solutions: From what I have seen, this feature may not be worth what it costs. It's not free, and the website seems hard to navigate. But this review is about the code reader, and Repair Solutions is a separate purchase, so should be considered as such.Battery/Alternator Testing feature: This code reader does not load test your battery. Don't expect it to tell you if you have a bad battery. The only thing this tester might do is tell you the voltage of the charging system as the computer reads it.Freeze Frame Data: So for those that don't know, freeze frame data is data the car computer stores, at the time the check engine light was triggered. This can be helpful in determining the cause of the check engine light. However, this is an $80 scan tool. Don't expect it to tell you every piece of data you want to know. Also each model of car will store only certain freeze frame data. So the data stored will likely be different on every car you plug this in to. It may or may not show you fuel trim data, or o2 status, or what have you. However it's a handy feature, and does more than enough for the average DIYer. Most non professional techs wouldn't know what to do with the data presented anyway. And for professional techs, you probably have access to a $5000 scan tool that will tell you what you need to know.Other thoughts: The cord included is plenty long. Don't bother spending money on the extended cord. This code reader does not show live data. If you have to have live data, consider BluDriver, or one of the Autel code readers. This code reader has a database included that you can search for a specific code, and read its description.Yes it's a bit pricey, but super reliable, fast, easy to use, and actually has enough features to warrant the cost...in my opinion.

Many scan tools claim to read certain types of codes. Those "professional" smart phone compatible OBDII wireless plugs claim to pull GM codes of all systems, but they don't. They are not professional tools. This is the most professional generic scan tool I've ever used. As a certified automotive technician I'm used to OEM backed scan tools and this Innova 3100i has some features that even some of those don't have. Some of the best features of this diagnostic tool: Reads Powertrain codes- engine and transmission; Reads Chassis codes- ABS and traction codes; Stores Freeze Frame data (what was happening when the code was set); and many other functions. I verified on multiple domestic and imported vehicles from 2002 and newer but it will work on all OBDII vehicles.

If you need to be able to view live engine data, this tool will not do that, but the Innova 3040c will for about $20 more. I highly recommend this product for the professional or the DIY-er.

As a woman, I am faced with a much bigger chance that a mechanic will try to take advantage of me, add to that the fact that I drive a BMW and you can rest assured I am going to be robbed blind. After a lot of research online I found the Innova 3100 and was ready to buy it because it has so high reviews. Just as I was about to finalize my purchase I came across the 3100i and really liked the fact that it has a color display so I called Innova and they told me this is a newer model with better ABS support and color screen. On top of that, there is a Mac version of the PC link available for this one and well, I'm a mac girl :)

Anyways, on the my reason for giving it 5 stars. The Service Engine Soon light came on a couple of weeks ago and after calling my local BMW shops as well as the dealer, I found that I would have to pay around $250 just to get the codes read. My Innova machine arrived today and as soon as I got home I decided to plug it in and get working. The tool started up very fast and within less than 1 min I had the codes an relevant information displayed. I called a mechanic and told him the codes and was told I needed 4 oxygen sensors on my car at a cost of $320 not including labor. While I felt it did not sound too expensive considering I do have a BMW, I decided to Google the codes and learned that the most likely reason for my codes was a vacuum leak. Since I happened to have ordered the air filter along with this scanner, I decided to poke around with a flashlight while I changed the filter and I found that the intake hose clamp was loose and was likely letting air in past the MAF sensor. I changed the filter, tightened everything up and cleared the codes. After driving the car not only did I not get the SES light back on, I also noticed the car idle was suddenly smooth as can be. All in all, not only did this scanner tell me what was wrong but it also ended up saving me hundreds and hundreds of dollars!!! Do yourself a favor, buy this scanner! You won't regret it!

Ok so for all you DIY'ers, I understand the marketing on some products get a little vague. And the options they say the product can do, they do not give you in full. i.e. ABS. Ya this production read ABS, but only on certain vehicles. PLEASE DO YOUR FULL RESEARCH ON ANY PRODUCT YOU ARE WANTING TO BUY!!!! Especially if you are not familiar with how to work it. Contact the manufacturer of the production if you have but NEVER leave it to the manufacturer marketing to tell you 'exactly' what the product does. Also, for all those reviews that just BASH the units the units because it is 'DOA' or whatever, that is not helpful. MOST everything you buy in the world is 'man made', and 'man made' stuff is never perfect out the hundreds of thousands or millions of products produced. I have to deal with this just as everyone else does. Now, with that out of the way, on the the review. What a OBDII Scanner tool is designed to do is give you the trouble code that the vehicle is producing. Now, I dare someone to go find ALL the available DIC's code for ALL vehicles made between 1997 and 2013 (or whatever the ending year is the unit you have supports for vehicle). You have your generic DIC's numbers that ALL makers use, then you have your specific number that are unique to that year, make and model of that vehicle, (if i'm not mistaken). Your generic codes will have a short description with it to lead you in the right direction. i.e. P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Fault (this was for a 2007 Nissan Frontier I scanned for a friends vehicle). Why did it happen? Not sure, but the this is the current issue on why the vehicle is not running correctly. It COULD be the oil rings on the piston are allowing too much oil to get into the cylinder and fouled out the plug and causing misfire. It COULD be the Coil Boot or Spark Plug Wire is not transmitting the electricity like it is supposed to causing misfire. This unit (and all units for that fact) will give you the current issue. It is your job to either find the cause and fix it yourself or take it to a mechanic and have them find the root cause of the issue and fix it. Now, This tool does state it does ABS, what it doesn't tell you is, it does ABS,BUT ( and here's the catch) only on specific vehicles they have coded for, for the vehicles that provide that information. Now with that being stated, that is the 'marketing' that got ya. Again, do your OWN research. I have not been able to troubleshoot the ABS portion of a vehicle at the moment although I have scanned 4 or so cars with it since I have had it. A 2008 Acadia does have this option it but there was no issue with it to be able to capture a trouble code for it so it just PASSED that test. I have had chance to use the Battery/Alternator Tester on it. This requires you to run the test while the engine is running at 2000+ RPMs for 20 seconds. I will say this, I don't think the reading is accurate for some reason. I have scanned my 2014 Silverado and 1998 Mercedes E250 (i think it was a E250) with the battery/alternator tester on the unit. It DID state my truck and the mercedes was not satisfying the charging volts. My truck, I can't see this as it is a 'brand new' alternator. The Mercedes I can as the new battery won't stay charged. BUT regardless, I can't trust the unit on this information cause I know my truck is good. I have checked with a multi-meter and the charging volts was around 14v-/+. I believe it was reading wrong cause it has to get the information from Computer of the vehicle, and how that is coded, I have no idea how the computer was coded to check the charging amps/volts but I don't have a DIC light on for any reason regarding this. So with that being stated, I believe the battery/alternator tester is not that accurate when it reads the charging information from the computer. I DO know that the DIC codes that are captured due the engine light / malfunction light is on has not failed to indicate the current issues with the vehicle scanned. All the DIC's were captured and reported correctly. Oxygen Sensors and Cylinder Misfires have all been correctly reports and fixed accordingly based on what I have received from the 3100i unit. As far as the website goes for reports, i have used this SEVERAL times to give the report to the lady's I have helped and all you need is to sign up for free. You DO NOT have to pay for any part of the additional options if you don't want to.! It does give you a fairly decent report to take to the mechanic FOR FREE if you so choose to do that. This will help expedite the mechanics troubleshooting as the mechanic will know where to start looking. Again, this is not a 'Professional' grade tool and you do get what you pay for. With that being stated, i feel this tool is better than 'OK' for the price especially for the report you get from the website once you signup for free and connect your unit to your computer to upload the information. I do feel this unit might be more of 3.5 stars that 4 simply because the unit doesn't give correct batter/alternator volt readings. At least in my unit anyways. My unit might have a defect in this function. I do agree with some people that working around the unit is not as intuitive as it should be. I order to get the report and setup new vehicles you will need the VIN number to setup if you plan on adding it to the website before you scan it. For those that buy this ANY OBDII scanner, ALWAYS try it out, even if you don't have anything with your vehicle. This will get you accustomed to it workings. I did, that is how I knew the alternator tester wasn't accurate ;). In conclusion, after using this several times and utilizing the website for information and reports for free, I feel this is a good unit for the price. I hope this information helps for what little I could report on about this unit.
