I began reading Innovating Women on a cross-country plane ride and 4.5 hours later still couldn’t put it down. Vivek Wadhwa and Farai Chideya have done a phenomenal job of highlighting the inspiring stories of women of all ages and ethnicities across the globe. While the nexus of all these stories is life in the tech sector, each has a different focus – investing/funding, entrepreneurship, work/life trade-offs, etc. Situated between each story are smaller vignettes nudged against statistics and historical information that provide context for the trends we see around us today.

There are a growing number of articles and books about women in technology, but none of them provide as wide and varied a perspective as this one does. The book’s creation is itself an innovation; Wadhwa and Chideya built much of it by crowdsourcing stories, research ideas and potential interviewees. I was fortunate enough to find a request for participation early on and commented to a number of my colleagues about the collaborative, thoughtful and inspiring discussions I was having and reading about with other women. The book captures the spirit of the organic and lively exchanges from the crowdsourcing platform.

Everyone should read this book. Whether or not you are a woman in tech and science, you’ll find stories that resonate with you, that speak to your experience and to that of your peers. If you’re just getting started, read this for inspiration and also for the practical advice that can help you in your career.

To be completely honest, I was a bit worried and not as excited to read this book when I realized it was a book of essays. However, my dismay was quickly replaced by interest and a desire to keep reading. The book delivers powerful conversation starters and actionable ideas about how to continue improving the female position within the tech industry. Amazing book with a strong message

I previously had no knowledge of the authors and saw an article about the book in the newspaper India West. As a man, my interest in reading this book is to get some insight into specific challenges that women in leadership face not just in technology but in general. This book was eye opening as I didn't know much about the gender inequality present in Silicon Valley. This book beautifully weaves together stories from women from various diverse backgrounds facing discrimination, difficulties in obtaining funding, and other various challenges. I was shocked at some of the types of discrimination that women in higher positions have endured. I have been a gender lens investor in impact investments focused on women's empowerment through Calvert Foundation. From this, I have learned that women seem to naturally have a better understanding of the needs of the community as a whole compared to men and that there is great impact investing in women entrepreneurs. I feel that the work of Mr. Wadhwa is very commendable in going against the current to help bring light to this important issue and change the situation. I sincerely hope that both men and women will share this book with their friends and loved ones.
