It came "bare", no instruction card, not a carded item like you would get from MicroCenter or other retailers. The tube is not sealed in any way; who knows if you are getting a full 1.5 grams worth. Since I have used the product before, I knew how to use it. For those of you without instructions, take a coffee cup half-filled with hot water (nuked for 90 seconds or so). Make sure the tube cap is on tight, stand the tube in hot water for at least a minute to soften the stuff. The water level should not be so high that water can leak into the top of the tube along side the plunger! (The good part: this stuff is thick, not like cheaper, thin and runny compound!) Squeeze a dab of the stuff on top of your CPU. (The CPU and mating heat sink must be clean and dry!). The instructions (if you get them!) say to use a "pea size" dab of compound. That may be too much. I'd use 1/2-pea's worth! After placing the dab, carefully put your heat sink, carefully centered, down on to the CPU. Apply moderate pressure while rotating the heat sink left and right a few times to distribute the stuff. (it also helps if you warm up the heat sink with a hair dryer.) Clamp down the heat sink. (It might be difficult to lock the clamp, especially if you used too much compound.) As you use the computer, the CPU will heat up and the compound will distribute itself further. This paste is absolutely excellent! I am a computer repair technician and have begun using it on customer's laptops instead of the crap Dell and Apple. Let me tell you these customers always come back with smiles saying how much cooler their systems run with this stuff. Arctic Silver is still in my toolkit for certain situations, but this paste makes for an absolute wonder when it is used on mobile computers. I replaced my parsonal gaming machine's paste with this stuff because I saw horror stories related to IC Diamond and sure enough it had worn the top of my cpu die a bit and that is unacceptable. I replaced it with Arctic MX-4 and have had fantastic results. One thing which is VERY important to note about this paste is that it is THIN. Arctic Silver 5 is tacky and rather thick which is well suited to heat sinks which have a lot of pressure from the screws holding it on. Arctic MX-4 can still be used in these situations, but with MX-4 LESS IS ABSOLUTELY MORE!!! practice a few times when applying it because you may need to adjust your application methods for this paste depending upon what you are used to using. I would absolutely without a doubt recommend this paste to everyone building a high performance desktop machine or anyone trying to significantly lower the heat output of say an Alienware laptop or retina display macbook pro as is extremely adept at this task. Do be aware that Apple is picky as hell about every little thing inside of your machine so be sure if you have this applied it is done by a professional! I have used many types of thermal material. This product stands out for three reasons. Easy of use - It applies very easily, and spreads out well. That is what you need to do before using this. I used this on a lapped h100i mated to a bare die 4790k. The temperature difference between this and noctua NT-H1 was about 10C running P95 26.6 and identical fan speeds. Apply a small amount on the die and spread with a small amount spread on the heatsink. When you mate the two surfaces together, shift them around a little bit, gallium seams to have surface tension stronger than water and you want the CLU on the die to mate with the clu on the heatsink or IHS (depending on if you run bare die). Working in warm temps keeps it in a liquid state and spreading it ensures that the gallium in the CLU will reach all the little nooks and crannies leaving no void of air. The die has an almost mirror finish so the CLU tends to want to pool into droplets. I used a nitrile glove to spread/smear a very tiny bit on the die until the mirror finish was turned into a haze. Then I applied a little bit more and spread it around with a brush. I did the same method on the water block. Running quiet mode (up to 1100rpm fans) on the H100i w/ 4.8Ghz @ 1.35V P95 26.6 I yielded a max temp of 70C after running for an hour. Have been a long time user of AS Ceramique and decided to give the IC7 a try on my new build. 125w AMD proc with a Hyper 212 cooler and IC7, temps have never gone above 40*C. Absolutely amazing. I will continue buying this stuff until I stop building/repairing PCs.

I didn't do any of the strange hard instructions people post on here. I put a blob on the processor, prob 1/10th a tube, doesn't REALLY MATTER how much, simply because it is non-conductive. So yeah. Blob on processor. Set on heatsink. Lightly tighten screws just enough to hold heatsink but still let me wiggle it around a bit to spread the paste. Crank the screws down. Done.

Video card instructions. Remove heatsink. Rubbing alcohol off old paste. Apply blob of new paste. Set heatsink on paste, wiggle a bit, reattach heatsink. Done. Probably use less than on a full size CPU but again, non-conductive. Don't go crazy with it there is enough to do 7 full size processors or probably 12 GPUs. Use that as your metric for measuring.

I've been building PCs since 1996 and this thermal paste is the best I've used. Definitely recommended.

Works really well - but apply it correctly

I used this first on a power supply project at work (I'm an embedded programmer) - power fets and it worked really well. I had some left over so I tried it on my laptop (an old thinkpad, wholse nvidia gpu tended to run hot). The temperatures went down.
One thing I can't stress enough - apply it the right way!!!! One dot in the center (~5mm) for my CPU, or a line for rectangular dies. Do. not. spread. it. This stuff feels wrong - it is really stiff, but slightly sticky. The idea is that one central dot, when squished, will have no air voids at all. If you pull it apart, start over again. It is viscous enough so there is no pump-out with the expansion-contraction cycles.
It works, but you have to apply it right.

Did you remove the fan from your cpu to clean it? Then you NEED this stuff...

So some time ago, I removed the cooler from my cpu and cleaned it out. Little did I know that thermal paste was a thing, let alone that I should've applied it after removing the cooler. After I put everything back together, my cpu fan was running crazy fast (don't ask what rpm it was running at, all I know is that it was significantly louder than before) running normal tasks. After some research, I found out what the problem was. So I ordered this stuff, took my cooler off again, cleaned up the paste that was still on the cpu and cooler, put this stuff on and now it works great. Quiet as a mouse, just like before.

After this experience, I've downloaded a few programs to stress test my pc and monitor temps and fan speed. Nothing over 57c on the cpu and steady fan speed around 2800rpm during a 30 minute stress test. Not bad if I do say so myself. Be careful though, it's a little sticky and the cpu can become dislodged from the socked if you're not careful...

my opinion from recent experience:
i did an apples to apples comparison on this today.
dell e6500 laptop with a 35 watt penryn cpu.
NOTE: i don't spread my paste and i use as little as possible so that it doesn't spill over the side. little wiggle to seat it (optional) and away we go. i'm a hobbyist. i install about 5 cpu's a month and the e6500 is the machine that i use to test any cpu that works in it because cpu's are so easy to install in a e6500. if it works in the dell, i know i can install it in another applicable machine. you can go ahead and install your cpu paste differently if you want. i do it my way. m'kay?
arctic silver 5 after about 15 minutes of full throttle..88c. it touched 90c, but, for the most part, it hovered around 88.
i.c. diamond under the same conditions: 72c.
that was just a few minutes ago.

every now and then, i want to save my i.c. diamond and i'll use some a.s.5 (especially if the cpu isn't gonna stay in the machine very long). for me, the i.c. always runs a little cooler.
this is my experience and my opinion.
given the option, i'll stick with i.c. diamond.
the noctua nt-h1 stuff works pretty good, too. it's also a little easier to spread. i warm the icdiamond up a little.
