My hat is off to TRIZ Master Victor Fey and Mr Rivin, they have done a service to all who want to learn the real basis for TRIZ (The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) methodology and apply it effectively.
These guys have done it, and show others how its done.

The organization and structure of the book is good with a brief and understated introduction followed by a good chapter on resolving system conflicts that makes a lot of sense and appears to be a helpful and original way of improving upon normal engineering problems solving techniques. The next chapter on substance-field analysis is the most conceptually difficult and requires considerable study and thought to master and I am not all the way there yet. The next chapter on ARIZ is also a dense and somewhat cryptic read. The penultimate chapter on laws of technological system evolution is worth the price of the book by itself for anyone engaged in product planning or R and D. The examples are given are helpful and provide good guidance. The final chapter on guiding technology introduction is a good way to end, building on the rest of the text and providing a high level way forward.
One of the positive aspects of this text is that the authors can bring up examples where they actually did things here in the US that led to real results in the marketplace. At the risk of sounding chauvanistic,(though my mother was Ludmilla Alexandrovna), examples from here and now carry a lot more weight than what happened back in the USSR.
You can read this book "on the surface" and it will give you a good introduction, you can also use it as a work book and you will get a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of TRIZ.
What makes this book so extremely valuable is that it focuses on the essence. I never found a book that is so focused. It reveals the underlying thinking process of TRIZ. With the help of this book I am starting to understand the power of ARIZ, an element of TRIZ that is often neglected in other books on the subject.
The presentation of how the laws of evolution can be used for technology forecasting and determination of high-potential innovations is for me one of the great highlights of this book.
Using this book as a work book requires quite some reading discipline. It is focused and demanding, and that is exactly what I want. It gives the certainty that having understood its content will bring me a great step ahead.
Definitely my favourite on TRIZ.
