CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.
Unfold the Hexbug Nano Hive Habitat Set from Innovation First and send your Hexbug Nano Mutant Specimen skittering through a series of build-your-own mazes. With 35 included construction pieces, you can build a series of different environments for your Nano to explore. Simply fold up the habitat to take it wherever you go!
Unfold and Discover New Habitats
The Hexbug Hive Habitat Set features efficient foldable construction that allows you to take your habitat wherever you go. To open, simply slide the two textured black hexagons toward the sides of the set, and the two sides will unlock. To close, simply fold both sides back toward the center and snap into place--your newly created mazes will remain intact.
The set opens onto a gray-and-orange platform with a white second level and a ramp that gives you access to multi-level fun. The gray level has many small holes where you can insert construction pieces as you see fit.
Build Interactive Mazes for Your Mutant Specimen
The Hive Habitat Set includes 16 cogs, 16 workable doors, 2 spinning spirals, and 1 seesaw for you to create your own interactive maze. Each of these pieces plugs into the holes on the gray platform. Don't be afraid to push them in, they need a little force! Use the working doors to form a series of adjustable mazes and position the ramps and spinners to send your Nano ricocheting around the platform and up to the second level.
Our testers initially found the setup a little confusing, but don't let this discourage you! Place the pieces in wherever you like. Your Nano will find a way to explore around them, keeping you entertained for hours. But be careful: these construction pieces are small and could pose a choking hazard. The set requires one AG13 battery (included).

Hexbug is staring to change all that though with these new sets - my kids love the multilevel aspect. There is a ramp for the hexbug to travel up and roam around on the second level. My kids get the biggest kick out of this happening. They can also use the pegs on the lower level to create obstacles for the hexbugs to maneuver around.
Like the other hexbug habitats, this one connects into other parts, so it can be part of a bigger hexbug city. Definitely a great creative addition to our set!
Consider me a convert. I actually enjoy this toy almost as much as he does. It's amazing the way these little buzzing robots mime the actions of actual bugs. Watching them zip around this set, going up an down the levels, spinning in the buggy spinner thing...it's mesmerizing.
If you are wondering "are hex bugs all that", I say "yep". Our 6 year old is kind of science loving kid. But I think just about any kid would dig this.
The set itself is great, and a great way to start. We are now going to be ditching all of our bulky zhu zhu pets in favor of these smaller (and far superior) animal replication toys.
Beyond that, the kids were able to immediately figure out how to set the playset up and had a lot of run racing each other around the paths. The original batteries were almost completely drained with about 3 hours of play, which for the size of the bug seems a little weak. The bug still vibrated but did not have enough power to move anymore.
