1. What is included with this product?
You will receive one Solar Security Floodlight, a rechargeable battery or battery pack, an amorphous solar panel with an attached 15-foot power cable, mounting hardware, and a user guide.
2. How do I install the Solar Security Floodlight and solar panel?
Use the included mounting screws and anchors to mount your Solar Security Floodlight and solar panel. You may need to pre-drill holes for harder mounting surfaces.

The Solar Security Floodlights use amorphous solar panels. The solar panel for the 50 LED Security Floodlights is approximately 6x6-inch and generates 10 Volts DC and 100 milliamps of current when in direct sunlight. The solar panel for the off-white 80 LED Security Floodlights is approximately 6-inch x 8-inch and generates 10 Volts DC and 120 milliamps of current when in direct sunlight. The solar panel for the black 80 LED Security Floodlights is approximately 6-inch x 8-inch and generates 6 Volts DC and 240 milliamps of current when in direct sunlight. The solar panels can charge properly working batteries with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. The amorphous solar panels will still charge the batteries on a cloudy or stormy day, but not as fast. The solar panels will not function properly if they are placed in shaded locations or behind windows.
5. What is an amorphous solar panel? Are there other types?
There are two main types of solar panels that are commercially available: amorphous and crystalline. There are pros and cons to each type of solar panel. The crystalline solar panels are able to create more power per square inch than amorphous panels; however they require stronger sunlight to generate power in the first place. This means crystalline panels will perform poorly on cloudy or stormy days. Amorphous panels do not require the same strength of sunlight to generate power and are capable of producing power on cloudy or stormy days. We chose to use an amorphous panel for this product because the panel is capable of producing enough energy to keep the light running at night and increases the reliability of the light by ensuring it will still charge on days the sun is not shining. Please note that this does not include shade. Both types of solar panels will perform poorly if they are in a shaded location as the light available in the shade is too weak for either type of panel. They need direct access to the sky to function properly.
6. Can I put my amorphous solar panel anywhere?
You can place or mount the amorphous solar panel up to 15 feet away from the light; however you must always plug the solar panel into the Solar Security Floodlight to allow the batteries to charge. The panel needs to be placed outside in a sunny area and needs to face the southern sky. If it is in the shade or behind glass, it will not charge properly.
7. What if the power cord is not long enough to suit my needs?
15 foot extension cords are available from MAXSA Innovations. You can connect more than one if you need to; however we recommend using no more than three extension cords.
8. What type of batteries does the Solar Security Floodlight use and how long do they last?
The 50 LED Motion Activated Solar Security Lights use a 6 Volt/4 Amp-hour sealed rechargeable Lead-Acid battery. The 80 LED Motion Activated Solar Security Lights use a 3.7 Volt/3.6 Amp-hour sealed rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack. The battery or battery pack should provide up to the maximum runtime for roughly 2-3 years, depending on use. After that you may see diminished runtimes. When your battery or battery pack needs to be replaced, you can find replacements from most battery retailers or from MAXSA Innovations.
9. How long does my Solar Security Floodlight need to charge before I can turn it on?
We recommend you do an initial charge of three days with the solar panel connected and the power switch Off to ensure a full charge. After that, you can move the power switch to the Auto position. Once the power switch is in the Auto position, as long as the solar panel receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day, the Solar Security Floodlight should charge enough during the day to work each night.
10. What kind of LEDs does the Solar Security Floodlight use?
The Solar Security Floodlights use 0.075W LEDs that produce a cool white color with a color temperature of approximately 6500K. A color temperature of 6500K is commonly associated with a daylight color. The LEDs produce a combined total of 250 lumens for the 50 LED Security Light. The 80 LED Security Lights differ in lumens because the black version has been updated with a Lithium-ion battery pack. The off-white version still has a Lead-Acid battery, however this will be updated shortly. The off-white LED Security Light produces 340 lumens and the black LED Security Light with the Lithium-ion battery pack products 420 lumens.
11. Where are the motion and light sensors and can I adjust what direction they face?
The motion and light sensors are behind the curved, white plastic lens protruding out of the bottom end of the light. The motion and light sensors can be pointed in almost any direction. They can be rotated side to side and up and down. Once you are happy with the vertical alignment, be sure to tighten the elbow joint to keep it steady.
12. What is the range of the motion sensor?
The range of the motion sensor is determined by the SENS dial on the bottom of the motion sensor. It comes preset at roughly 15-feet, but can be adjusted by turning the dial towards the plus (+) or minus (-) sign. It has an adjustable range of 10-feet to 40-feet.
13. Can I disable or turn off the motion sensor?
No. The motion sensor cannot be disabled. However the light will remain on as long as it detects motion and the batteries have power.
14. When I first move the switch to the Auto position, my Solar Security Floodlight comes on immediately even if the light is in full daylight. Why is that?
When you first turn the Solar Security Floodlight to Auto, it performs a test-activation regardless of motion or lighting conditions. The test should last roughly 30 seconds before the LEDs turn off. After this, your Solar Security Floodlight will perform as advertised.
15. How dark does it need to be for the Solar Security Floodlight to start turning on?
This is determined by you. If you want the light turn on during the day and during the night, set the LUX dial towards the graphic of the Sun. If you want the light to turn on only in complete darkness, set the LUX dial towards the graphic of the Moon. You can set the dial anywhere between as well depending of the level of darkness you desire before the light turns on.
16. How long will the light stay on?
The light will stay on as long as it detects motion and the battery has power. When fully charged, the 50 LED Motion Activated Solar Security Lights can provide up to 240 minutes of light in total before needing to be recharged. The 80 LED Motion Activated Solar Security Lights can provide up to 130 minutes of light in total before needing to be recharged. If there is no motion, the light will turn off after 10 seconds to one minute, depending on where you set the TIME dial.
17. Will the light stay on all night long?
No. The Motion Activated Solar Security Light is motion-activated only. The light will activate when motion is detected and stay on as long as the motion continues. The light will turn off 10 seconds to one minute after the motion stops, depending on how you have set the Time dial.
18. Will the Solar Security Floodlight continue to work in extreme weather conditions?
The Solar Security Floodlight works best between temperatures of 20 degree Fahrenheit and 120 degree Fahrenheit. If the temperature is 20 degree Fahrenheit or below, the batteries may not function properly, however the batteries will resume normal function once the temperature rises. The light is designed to withstand normal dirt and water exposure as well, but may be damaged by hurricanes and cannot be submerged in water.
19. My Motion Activated Solar Security Light is not turning on when I expect it to. Why is that?
Check the LUX dial. If you have the dial set towards the graphic of the moon, the light will not turn on unless the surrounding environment is completely dark. Any other lights that are nearby may prevent the light from turning on. If there are no other lights in the area, the surrounding environment may not be dark enough. To change this, slowly turn the LUX dial towards the graphic of the sun until the light activates.
20. What material is used for the light body?
The body of the light is constructed with ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic and the lens are constructed of HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) plastic, both of which can withstand a large temperature range and are known for impressive impact resistance and toughness. We use these materials in our construction to ensure a very durable light that will last for years.

I've included a diagram. I hope that helps point out the need for two drip loops The connector plug, the solar panel, and the light should be the highest points so that water would naturally flow away from them....to the lowest point...which is the 2 drip loops.
It provides a lot of light, I was pleasantly surprised how much area it lights up. I live in Iowa, so it has already been exposed to 100 degree days, frost, rain, snow, and below freezing weather. It continues to work flawlessly.
I am a degreed electrical engineer with many years of experience in solar lighting. I know what I am talking about. This light has actually created some embarrassment for me. I wish Amazon would stop shipping it immediately and the manufacturer correct its flaws.
I'll be looking at how I can send it back and get reimbursed immediately.
In my book, this is a great product.
I bought 1 unit and received it from Home Controls surprisingly quickly. It's when I ordered 3 more that I ran into trouble. One of them was defective, and Home Controls doesn't pay for return shipping. In other words, if they send you a broken product, it's going to cost you to get a refund or exchange. And the batteries on these things are heavy. So 5 stars for the light, but Home Controls gets the gas face for their customer-be-damned return policy. I won't be shopping with them again.
The first one I bought was about 5 years ago. The battery went bad so I replaced it without issue. I don;t remember the battery number, but you can get them on Amazon for about $10.
