Pros: Having said that, The unit works well out of the box.. remove the little cover on the needle/cartridge (not mentioned in the manual) and go.
The turn table has an auto stop function which works.
The armature has a switch that allows it to gently drop on a record.
The speakers sound "OK". Think "loud laptop speakers" quality.
It has a phono output which I piped into my Onkyo TX-NR646. More on that later.
The handle and lid are sturdy. I set this on a shelf, and it looks ok.
Cons: The sound is not earth shattering, and has no bass. Looking at the size of the speakers, one should expect this and not be surprised.
You cannot turn off the internal speakers completely, as the power knob is also the volume knob.
WTFs:The bluetooth is dumb. No you can't stream your records to your phone, you can stream your phone out these speakers. What? Why? I didn't bother with this.
It has a line input that I haven't tried. Again. Why? I guess if I had NO stereo equipment, or was 12, it'd be great for that Walkman I have but...
Warning about the RCA outs on the back: Some people are complaining it sounds terrible in their home AV receivers when hooked to "Phono" on their receiver, and then started trashing the turntable.. On my Onkyo I had the same issue, I hooked this 'phonograph' player to "Phono" and it sounded terrible. Ear grating noisy, like fingers on a chalkboard. WTF? I did some quick research.. Turns out this unit is 'amped' and the 'Phono' input on my Onkyo is looking for a NON-amped source. My solution was I hooked this to a "CD" Input, and the unit plays fine!
Try another input before complaining.
This should be in the manual, but it's not.
tl;dr, for this price, as a dip into vinyl, I don't see why it's a bad unit in the short term. Be sure to hook it up properly.
The build and sound quality reminds me so much like the portable album and "45" players we had for pop-up parties at school or hang-outs at a girlfriend's house. Yet, it's almost as light as my small laptop PC. This was truly a great buy that I will get a lot of regular use from playing all my "33s" and "45s" again, and buying some current artists on vinyl. Even my Dad's surviving "78s" also sound awesome, but are rough on the easily replaceable stylus.
Trust this for certain, uncompressed analog audio sounds much fuller and impressive than the compressed digital sound we've gotten used to over the last 25 years. Don't believe it? Well, you'll hear the same distinct similarities that those mostly "old head" jurors heard and knew when listening to the Blurred Lines song (Pharrell and Thicke) while clearly remembering the sounds from Marvin Gayes' worldwide 1977 hit and party jam, Got to Give It Up. "Old head" ears (like me) are more attuned to hearing a much fuller spectrum of sounds, ranges and rhythms than people who have only listened to compressed digitized music. Simply, it just sounds more full, real and live.
Even the price on this 3-speed stereo turntable was under $50 perfect. It's well worth buying for all those middle and subtle sounds I've been missing in my music and comedy albums. Buy this Victrola portable record player, and FINALLY get your 21st century musical head and ears right --- at a low cost. Your mind, body, soul and ears will thank you.
