Many sports students have gone missing over the months. A total is 18, with no trace.....except for the parts of the bodies left of the guys taken. The girls- not a piece found. It's a strange town, and EmVee's family seems to be part of a puzzle. She makes friends, but in pain in the rear girl, seems to have a lot of interesting facts about what's going on.
Join EmVee as she tries to find the connection on why her family moved here and what's so special about Newport.
It's different from the books I have read by Preston. I couldn't get into it. Just not my thing.
Read on my friends.
As with all of the author's works, this story is well written with the perfect amount of detail It kept me in the dark enough that I wanted to turn the page to find out what happened next. It's an easy and quick read. And I can't wait for the next book.
EmVee moved together with her family to Newport. Coming from New York, she is not entirely excited about the move, but she manages all right at the school. She is even attracted to two hot guys, Silas and Kayson, bot being members of the football team and playing in a band. EmVee, being a semi-pro boxer and following in her parents' tracks is not entirely comfortable with dating, but the hormones do the job for her. However, strange things are happening in the small town, and engaging herself in the investigation of disappearances and murders of local sport talents endangers not only EmVee's life..
I quite liked this short opening story with open end. The story was simple, just one plotline developing quickly maybe a bit jumpy, in front of the reader. The investigation and all the trouble around it built the tension in the story, the horror scenes added a bit of chills and provided motives for EmVee's further goals, and the high school drama balanced it with emotional excitement. Mix in a bit of supernatural in the form of witches and werewolves, and you get the picture.
Although some of the characters seem to be very interesting, we get to know them only briefly, and I hope there will be more details in the main series. I could totally relate with some of EmVee's feelings, especially her irritation at Megan (I would punch that girl in her face every time she appeared on the scene, honest). It is quite unique to have a female boxer character as the lead, and her connection to the supernatural world remains yet a mystery which I would like to uncover, so I am motivated to wait and read the next book as it comes out.
It had all the ingredients to catch my attention - a mystery, a heroine who is a fighter, literally and a paranormal tone to the tale. The book had me at the beginning and didn't let up till the end. And the end is not the or a finale but a curiosity to know what's going to happen next and how. So my appetite is completely aroused and I can't wait till I read the first book in the series. I have high hopes for it.
The characters, as much as the book could detail, were pretty good and their major points were highlighted, especially about EmVee. And her unique name is another point which won my attention. There was a lot of things going on at the same time so the pace was fast to keep my mind occupied but few things were a bit confusing. The paranormal part of the story didn't make sense till the end! I think it could have been worked into the story slowly instead of an abrupt addition. But I can see how it would star more in the following books.
In short, it was a very mysterious start and I am happy to follow the series.
I received voluntarily a copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't impact my review in any way.
