I've been a fan of Andrew Connell and Ted Pattison for a few years now. When I first started getting into SharePoint 2007 development, I found their Inside WSS 3.0 book and learned an incredible amount about SharePoint 2007 development. I was new to SharePoint 2007 at the time and that book really gave me a solid foundation that I was able to use and build upon going forward. Now that I'm deeply involved with SharePoint 2010 development for many different clients, I was anticipating the release of this book long before it came out. As soon as I could, I purchased it and it's been one of the most valuable reference points for SharePoint 2010 development that I've come across. Awesome, awesome, awesome book. If you're looking to get into SharePoint 2010 development, then this is the book for you. You should of course have some experience with developing in Visual Studio and writing code in .NET (C# is the focus of this book). I'm a MCT and I mention this book in every SharePoint 2010 class that I teach. Critical Path Training also has an awesome step-by-step SharePoint 2010 Development Environment build guide that is a must have.

I was interested in learning SharePoint development and this book was very good for an intro into basic concepts with good examples that you can try out on your own.

It took this group a while to publish this book but the wait was well worth it. I believe there are 5 to 10 nuggets within this book which you will not see collectively anywhere else. The explanations and tone within the book can be followed easily and retained for adaptation, architecture design and development patterns within the enterprise. Wingtip Toys is the fictitious company they use through-out the book (and if this was an actual company, its value just went up). The examples, use cases and illustrations presented are actually how one could take the power of SharePoint 2010 and leverage it as a game changer within the organization.

When looking up simple things, you can't find them. For the basics, editing, uploading, send to..., editing you won't find what you are looking for. Someone who reads HTML, etc this would be the book. It does not say anywhere on the cover what group of people it would benefit, which is ashame after spending so much money for it.

Almost every topic is about boasting the author's supposedly superior knowledge, with an half-hearted purposely cryptic attempt and drive you to learn the rest from some Critical Path training. Ted's been always a very bad writer since his Visual Basic days. You can read through this difficult book - difficult not because of the content - but the style and unwilling to part with any useful info - and still won't be able to take away much. The authors never want to explain anything clear or deep - a shame considering it's an "inside" book by MS Press about their own very promising technology.

Truly a gem amongst all Sharepoint books. This books gets you into the guts of Sharepoint 2010 from every angle regarding its history, architecture, methodology, philosophy and tricks. They leave no stone unturned and offer insight where other books offer procedure without the explanation of why. I have taken two of Ted's classes and despite his humility it always feels like I am taking a class with the guy who actually created Sharepoint. I would highly recommend this book for developers and I would recommend you read it from cover to cover several times as well as using it for reference.

I am currently studying for the developer certifications and this book is a big help. According to the Microsoft list it covers the material in the tests.

I've read and reviewed many SharePoint development books. This one sets the standard. It teaches developers the smoke and mirror tricks under the covers and allows them to build powerful solutions with minimal code. If you can only buy 1 book on SharePoint development, this on is it.
