Review

"Emotionally touching, not-to-be-missed conclusion to the Off the Map trilogy."
--Publishers Weekly Starred Review

- The Book Hookup

-This is a Book Blog

"Lia Riley has become one of my stalwart authors. She writes with guts. Her characters are not one-dimensional and they have substance. "
- Karen's Book Haven

"Lia Riley managed to make these two beautifully flawed characters grow. . .and apply other things they learned in the past books"
- Maf's Crazy Book Life

About the Author

After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, Lia Riley scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about as-of-yet unwritten books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. She and her family live mostly in Northern California.

Inside Out was hands down my favorite book in the Off the Map series by Lia Riley, which is impressive considering how much I adored the first two books. This was the perfect conclusion to Talia and Bran’s story. I will admit that I went into Inside Out with a bit of trepidation. This couple had been through so much, and I knew the rest of their story would be emotional. My heart wanted a happy ending, but it was clear that both Talia and Bran had work to do before they were ready to move forward together as a couple.

When the story starts, the pair is still physically separated by thousands of miles. Talia is in Africa serving as a Peace Corps volunteer, and Bran is working for a marine activist organization on a boat in the Antarctic. Their hearts are still very much connected, though, after Talia accepted Bran’s apology and forgave him for his past behavior that had driven them apart. However, circumstances soon bring the couple back together and force them to take a long, hard look at themselves, their relationship, and their future.

After the first few chapters I wanted so badly to reach into the book and give Talia a big hug. She continued to face some real struggles, both mentally and physically. I completely empathized with her feelings about herself after her time in Africa. Her self-confidence was non-existent, and I couldn’t blame her for pulling away from Bran, even though I knew it wasn’t the answer. She was so much stronger than she gave herself credit for, and I hoped that as the book progressed she would start to believe in herself.

The Bran we see in Inside Out is the same hero I fell in love with in Upside Down. He was so patient and supportive of Talia, even as she continually distanced herself from him.

I know I say this with every Lia Riley book, but I think this is really her best one yet! Bran did some major growing up in this book (yay, Bran!!) and Talia went through some really tough times. Seeing the relationship between Bran and Talia's dad really grow throughout the novel was something really special. I also loved all the side characters (I hear we get to see a few of them in her novellas coming out next year. EEP!) especially a very special furry friend, Chester the Chinchilla, who was hilarious. But what I really loved was to see this couple work together to really earn their HEA. Riley's writing is enthralling and I really can't wait to read her next books!!!

I love this book.

Here's the truth: I'm not one for series. It's hard for me to get invested in a couple that keeps getting ripped apart. But Bran and Talia? That's not a problem. Riley's writing is gorgeous in all three books and there's a fabulous growth in all her characters. Especially fun? Seeing Talia's parents again... in a very different light. But best of all? Seeing Bran and Talia earn their HEA. I feel like we don't see that enough in books. But this book has it in spades. A great conclusion to a fantastic series.

***I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

Inside Out is the final book of the Off the Map trilogy by Lia Riley about Bran and Talia. After following this couple through an intense few months, I was more than happy to pick up this book and see their relationship through to the end (for better or for worse!). Please note that if you have not read the previous books in this series there may be minor unavoidable spoilers! Talia is living her dream, working for the Peace Corps in Africa....or at least she thought it was her dream. Bran followed his own heart and is working on a ship in the Arctic, defending whales and Mother Nature against poachers. Their relationship is on hold in a sense at the beginning of this book as they are trying to figure out who they are without each other. It's all very confusing to me honestly!

Talia is a strong character. I liked her from the get go. She's innocent, but not to the point of being unbelievable, and she harbors a dark secret - her obsessive compulsive disorder. In this book - and I've been waiting since the beginning - Talia breaks down. We see her disorder in all it's ugly glory. It not only takes her from being a person you relate to but one you empathize with.

Bran <3 I'm not going to lie...I love Bran, BUT he was always a bit on the whiny, clingy, possessive side for me. Yet he also brings out the best in Talia. He compliments her in a way that most couples only dream of. He's the yin to her yang and all that goes with it! When Talia breaks, Bran is there. When she pushes, he pushes back. I LOVE it!!! Bran goes from being a boy to a man in this series and I loved being there to read his growth!

Alas, the best trilogy I have read this year comes to a close. I am so glad that I stuck it through beside Talia and Bran as they navigated their way off the map (ha, get it? 'Cause it's the name of the series. I'll go now.) into uncharted waters to figure themselves out and if they can make it in a world that seems to want nothing more than for them to be apart. This final book* is just the ending that this couple deserves. And yes, I am aware that they're fictional, but Riley writes with such conviction that I can't help but to feel like they are really in my life somehow.

*This is supposed to be the last book in a trilogy. However, I sincerely hope this is not the end of my mentally rooting Bran, I mean my enjoyment of this couple's relationship.

As mentioned, this is book three of the Off the Map series. While Riley does a good job of sprinkling in each character's back story, I'd definitely read books one and two before giving this one a go. It'll help you get more attached to this story.

Like both its predecessors, Inside Out made me feel ALL of the things! It was happy and then it was really dark and then it got kinda scary but then it was happy and then CRYING. I'm pretty sure that I got weird looks on my train as I read this book and reacted to it but, there you go. It's well paced and dramatic without being melodramatic, which I think is an important difference. All of the characters are well written and distinct, and even if you don't like them they're developed, so you have a good reason to dislike them. I also continued to appreciate how Talia's OCD was explored and explained and tested in their relationship. My girlfriend has OCD and I have to say that as the "Bran" of our couple (I think that makes me the sexy one. I win.
