Michael Neill is a genius at expressing something that is relatively simple but can seem complex. His analogies and stories are incredibly helpful and insightful and put this understanding into concrete terms. In the year since I first read this book, I have shared it and the three principles with many people, and their lives have been similarly transformed -- not because of me, but because I simply tapped them on the shoulder and pointed in the direction that Michael Neill first showed me.
This is not a self-help book. It's not a book of techniques. There really is nothing to learn or do. It's a book that will show you something you already know but could never articulate. But being able to see it, to articulate it, changes everything. I threw away every self-help book I owned, stopped reading articles and emails about "10 ways to be happy today" or whatever. I don't need them anymore, and I'll never need them again.
My gratitude is immeasurable. Thank you, Michael, for this beautiful book.
Here is some of what is meant by the term "inside out revolution": When we scrounge around outside for circumstances to provide fulfillment, we are operating on an erroneous assumption that fulfillment is obtained by getting the outer situation that we want. We are coming from a place of lack and eventually end up at the same sense of lack we were trying to evade in the first place (even if we attain our 'ideal' circumstances). In contrast, with a 180 degree turn in our attention we realize the life flowing within us right now- we experience the innate well-being that exists within us this very moment. From this space of internal peace we still move toward positive goals, but now we are aligned with the greater wisdom and not acting out of desperation.
I love that this book purports no techniques or methods- it's simply about looking with our own eyes deeply into the fact of life- and our innate wisdom and connection to Mind (Tao) is relaxed into. Eckhart Tolle wrote: "You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you, and allowing that goodness to emerge." Syd Banks and Michael Neill refer to this same paradigm shift: We don't grit our teeth and claw our way to becoming a happy, good person; but just the opposite: we relax and trust into the deeper truth of our own being.
Despite my initial skepticism, this book is now actually one of my all time favorite books, second only to "The Power of Now." It is full of vivid examples of the three principles at work in people's lives, and it was a joy to read this book. Neill writes in a sort of "no-frills" voice that to me is very genuine and sincere and made reading the book a real pleasure. It took me a little while to get into the book, but soon the book was one light-bulb moment after the next. I am a psychiatrist and I believe this book and the three principles have tremendous relevance and potential for improving mental health care. Since reading the book, I have enjoyed more quiet and less chatter within my own mind.
Second time I read the book, my inner life was in turmoil. I was going through a rough patch in my personal relationship. I felt compelled to take action that I knew would make things much worse between me and my spouse. But I just didn't know how I could go on with my life without giving her a piece of my mind. I was dreading the outcome of the steps I was feeling compelled to take.
But as I started reading this book for the second time, I felt a shift inside me. The shift I felt was gradual. It came and went. But I could feel that I was changing. My mindset was changing. Being alive just felt different. Not better. Nor worse. Just different.
What I realized was that all the drama that I am fighting is MY OWN CREATION. Somehow, by thinking that I must give my spouse a piece of my mind I was giving life to that idea. The creative power of consciousness within me was actually creating my reality in a subtle but such a powerful way that I felt compelled to take action.
I WAS REACTING TO THE THOUGHT I EMPOWERED WITH THE CONSCIOUSNESS WITHIN.
The thought above made me feel lighter than I had felt in a long time.
With that said, I feel that this book can make the same life changing difference to others. All that is needed a will to change and an open mind.
