Warren A. Keller is a world-renowned astro-imager (APOD, Sky & Telescope, Astronomy magazines, etc.) and teacher of image processing. He has presented at the Northeast, Midwest, and Advanced Imaging Conferences and has written extensively on the subject. He is a six-time Sky & Telescope author. The information is basic but mostly useless due to shockingly poor printing

I have both the kindle and 2nd edition printed edition. I bought the printed version because I found the kindle version useless without the images, it's frustrating when the text refers to a figure# that doesn't exist and there are random pagebreaks and weird formatting everywhere. After a couple weeks of trying to understand some topics in the printed version, I discovered why I found many topics confusing. The book has pages printed out of order and jumps from topic to topic in the middle of explanations and instructions, so trying to follow along is very difficult and many things just make no sense at all. I didn't even know there was a table of contents for 2 weeks, I found it buried after page 114. I also found the copyright notice and acknowledgements/preface hidden in the middle of the book. The pages are randomly all over, page 5 is followed immediately by page 115 for example.

On the one hand, I feel less stupid now. Many people have recommended this book to me and I thought it was just horribly written and hard to understand. On the other hand, I've bought two books that are relatively useless to me. On the third hand, maybe my misprint copy will become a valuable collectible I can sell at auction to retire.

I bought this book as the recommended PixInsight primer. The book contains a wealth of information and really helped me get started. While the examples, etc. are fairly straight forward with suggested settings and screen shots of the various scripts and processes, it does jump around a bit in places and I've had to do a lot of thumbing around to stay on top of what's happening. Combined with information available online, this books has proven well worth the cost for me as a beginner.

I purchased the first edition of this book and I found it to be of little help getting me up and running with the program. The second edition received many top reviews and many astrophotographers who's work I highly admire have recommended the book. I purchased it a couple weeks ago and it has already been a huge advantage to may image processing routines. Pixinsight is a program that involves iterative learning, you pick up something each time you use it. Purchasers of this book who are new to Pixinsight will find it basic enough to get started using the program and more experienced users will find more than enough material to supplement current routines and push their processing to a higher level. Highly recommended!

While the author clearly understands the software and subject matter, I find the lack of a companion set of download images for the reader to use while following along in the book a serious shortfall. The overall usefulness of this this book would be so much more enhanced with the additional material I am surprised, quite frankly, that they don't exist. I can only guess the authors assume readers must have every image and derivative required to follow along with the material so as to not be necessary. I think this is a big mistake, especially for beginners who do not possess such an image databank.

Not Happy. To start, I open the book and find the first page to be page 6. The pages were not ripped out, they just aren't there. I don't know if there are other sections missing. To start the book and already don't know what they are talking about does not bode well. Apparently Screen Transfer Function. This Second Edition is not a beginners book. In fact, from the back cover description, it might be better described as Volume 2.
As I learn more, I will update my review. AH. I just found the missing 30 pages between page 114 and 115. Onward.

I have the Kindle edition, and so using "Search" mode, I get a list of sites within the book for the term that I need help with, and I just work my way through the list, and/or, go directly to the appropriate chapter, and all that I need to know is right there. Well worth the expense.

The book seems to be very complete, but it is not "one-stop shop". It is helpful but tends to take a beginner along too many paths for it to be a stand-alone source. It is worth having, though, but using videos is also necessary, and it is nice to have a friend that can help also.

PixInsight is a very daunting piece of software. No matter how much experience you may have with other photo processing software, a new user will be instantly stumped by PI. The interface is unlike anything else. The functions and tools don't have familiar names. The tools themselves have multiple settings unlike any other image processing software. Online video tutorials from the various free streaming sites run the gamut from horrible to passable, with a few gems here and there along the way. The learning curve for new user is very steep.

Mr Keller walks you through the whole process of PixInsight processing, covering the tools, their settings, what they do, and how to use use them. He demystifies the program and makes things very easy to understand. This is the definitive guide to using the most powerful piece of astro-imaging software ever created. And it's worth every penny.
