Inside Room 913 is the story of eighteen-year-old Cynthia Holt, who is just starting her new job at a retirement home where her deceased mother and worked for many years. Before her mother passed away, she urged Cynthia to apply there for a job, but like many teens who don't want to work beside their parents, Cynthia initially resisted. In the end, Cynthia decided to try her hand at working in the aging retirement home, formerly a 19th century sanatorium, that is tired, dark, and foreboding. Even the parts of the home that have been renovated have seen better days. Cynthia gets her job, but there is just one catch - she is never to discuss or have any contact with the mysterious resident who occupies Room 913. Of course, the longer Cynthia works there, the more her curiosity gets the best of her. She starts blurring the boundaries of the home's prime directive, finally reaching the point of no return where she can no longer resist trying to solve the mystery of Room 913.
On a positive note, Inside Room 913 is very well-written from a technical perspective. However, where it falls down is the book's plot - it lacks the drama and punch one would expect from a suspense novel. I'm normally the kind of reader who likes to guess what's going to happen in suspense and thriller stories. Part of the fun is getting sucked in by clever red-herrings, then thinking I've got it all wrong, then thinking I'm right again. In the end, I'm usually wrong. But that's the point. A great suspense novel should leave you guessing until the bitter end, and should still surprise you!
Unfortunately, Inside Room 913 fell flat and was a disappointment for me. My first guess about the story's outcome turned out to be right. So, rather than being full of suspense, I found the book to be mildly curious, at best. Because the author is so technically proficient, I'm willing to bet that he has better stories in him. If so, I'll be charitable in stating that Inside Room 913 is probably not his best work.
Unfortunately as this story by Bruce A. Borders, eighteen year old Cynthia Holt has lost her job, which meant a return to a life under her father’s roof. When her mother found out about this she suggests to her daughter she should apply for a job at the assisted living facility she once worked at, naturally Cynthia cringes at hearing it, but subsequently agrees.
The facility in question had once been a sanitarium, or mental hospital in its early days; and with that came an list of horror stories regarding what had occurred there.
The most important instruction she received on her first day had been to totally ignore Room 913, which included talking about it with any of her co¬-workers. Working there, she could interact with any of its residents, and soon began to develop a relationship with some of them. Apparently one of the residents had a few secrets he kept close to himself, and one of them had concerned the forbidden room.
What is this secret? Is this resident more than what he appears to be? Does he know a secret regarding Cynthia? All of these questions are revealed as the story progresses to its conclusion. While I’d been somewhat happy with the ending, it did seem a little anti-climactic leaving a few questions seeming hanging there unanswered.
All-in-all the book had been an enjoyable quick read, which I completed in a single sitting, I’m giving this endeavor by Bruce A. Borders 4 STARS and hope to read more of his offerings.
The story is well written by Mr. Boarders and it is very evident he knows how to construct a compelling piece of suspense. The reader is literally unable to guess the surprises and gets to the end of the story still wondering what is going to happen. Only in the final moments do the details jump up and resolve the story to great satisfaction. I would recommend this book to suspense readers and anyone who would enjoy a good story.
