Book Description

Inside Track: Insider's Guide to Horse Racing provides essential information on what to wear, how to bet, how to watch a race, who the participants are, and where to see the best racing.

About the Author

Donna Barton Brothers has been a professional jockey, horse racing analyst, and on-air commentator. She rode professionally from 1987 to 1998 and retired as the second-leading female jockey in the nation by money earned. She has covered horse racing for the Television Games Network (TVG), ESPN, and in 2000 began working for NBC Sports as their on-track reporter and racing analyst on their thoroughbred horse racing shows. She has since covered the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, and Breeders’ Cup among many other thoroughbred horse racing events and races and for NBC Sports and NBCSN. She’s also covered the Hambletonian Stakes, the Rolex Three Day Event, the World Equestrian Games, the AQHA World Championship Show, and Professional Bull Riding (PBR), among other events, for NBC Sports. In 2011 she first published Inside Track: Insider’s Guide to Horse Racing. Written with the knowledge that there’s a huge learning curve for newcomers to horse racing and there were no books out there acting as a beginner’s guide to the sport. The first printing of Inside Track sold out and in 2014 a freshly revised and updated Second Edition of Inside Track: Insider’s Guide to Horse Racing was put into production.

This short and easy to digest book was written by someone who grew up in racing, became a jockey following in the boot steps of her mother, married a trainer and continues as a racing commentator. She writes with a straightfoward simplicity about a subject she knows inside and out. Her book is a perfect way to prepare for a wonderful day at the racetrack. You will know what to wear, what to expect, how to bet if you want, and how to decipher confusing terminology. You are encouraged to ask questions, and helped to learn and to appreciate the excitement and beauty to thoroughbred racing.

We ordered quite a few of these books for a signing event that took place at an event our company held this past weekend. The books came on time and were packaged neatly. I was happy to see that there were no creases, tears or rips on the covers or on any of the pages. The book itself it really insightful to those people looking to get their foot in the door in the racing industry. There is a lot more that goes into placing bets than people may believe, and this book lays it out in an easy to read and understandable manner.

Let's start with the content: not the "insider's guide" I had been hoping for. I think Donna is a fine track interviewer but writing is not her strong suit. The so-called inside dope is mostly pretty trivial nonsense like what to wear to the track -- ad nauseum. I was hoping for so much more about jockeys, horses and trainers.

Then, for the Kindle edition at least, let's talk about the typesetting. Appalling is not too strong a word. Did ANYONE do quality control on this dog's breakfast of a book??? It's bad enough to have to read banal copy, but to have play anagrams while you do it, so badly garbled is the text, that you're left tearing out your hair.

Don't waste your money.

Living near the Saratoga track, I wasn't really
into the sport; but did go to the track from time-to-
time. What is in this book was really nothng new
to me. It is a good guide if you've never been
to a thoroughbred track. It might be good for those
who don't pick up ideas quickly, as they might find
the book handy. Sorry, but I had such great hopes for
this book. I disappointed me.

I was hoping for an esoteric perspective of what it's like to be a jockey, and the stories and experiences that go with being a successful female jockey. I certainly think that a half rate repetitive quasi fashion guide was not worth the expensive price that I paid for the book.

I honestly can't believe this book got such low stars / reviews... It's an awesome book. We'll written. And covers all the
Angles of horse racing. It's informative and I am ever so glad I stumbled upon it. It's just a good introductory summary into racing and the sport in general. I'd give it 5 stars but I like more pictures... For anyone just perusing the horse racing industry this book is for you. This is a very good overall basic coverage of horse racing. Thank you to the author for the insight. I actually saw that it was rated so low and couldnt believe it so I had to write a review to rectify it. (Insert a smilie if I knew how)

Not at all what I was hoping for. The fact that the first chapter is devoted to appropriate attire at the races set me up with low expectations. I was not otherwise surprised.

I was expecting more about the horse and t h e relationship between rider and equine athlete but that was not the main focus here.

The lesson for me is to read the samples first. My mistake.
