John Gunther (August 30, 1901 – May 29, 1970) was an American journalist and author whose success came primarily in the 1940s and 1950s with a series of popular sociopolitical works known as the "Inside" books. He is best known today for the memoir Death Be Not Proud about the death of his teenage son, Johnny Gunther, from a brain tumor.

This is a wonderful book and the crown jewel of my library. It is indispensable for any history buff looking into the America of the post-war years of the late 1940s. Read it while watching The Best Years of our Lives and Eddie Muller’s Noir Alley on Turner Classic Movies. It’s definitely geared for grown ups who never learned how to read history backwards.

I will not write too much about book itself. John Gunther is world famous writer and you can find comprehensive reviews on it's writings.

As for the deal - for the price it is almost free! That's not a book you will read for illustrations, so it's condition is appropriate while it's readable and don't fall into pieces :)
Previous owner's remarks (I guess they came from long way off 60-s) adds even more to reading experience! :)

This is one in a series of books about Gunther's extensive travels in various parts of the world. This one focuses on the US and even though it was written in the mid-1940s, there are many lessons for today. The biggest one is that in many ways not much has changed over the last 70 years. He speaks about politicians, discrimination, the fact that while supposedly the best country in the world around a third are on some kind of assistance. You get an amazing look at all (at the time) 48 states, with a focus on politics, history, and geography. The four rather than five stars are due to the length. At times he goes on and on, and you have to get through (in my first edition), 920 tightly-printed pages.

What America has lost forever, and gained through hardship

Although this survey of the US was published in 1947, it is an amazing primer on the history of our nation up to that time from a social, economic and political perspective. It's also a great tale of the land -- what it was, how it was controlled and exploited, and what remains. Informative, funny and tragic, this book captures an America pre- and post-WWII in a way, going state by state, that should leave the reader in awe of how the country developed, its vast diversity, but also regretting much of what's been lost. It's not all pretty. Gunther examines the slums, racial divisions, corruption, political hatreds, poor education standards, bad economic choices, and the sheer ignorance of people who should have known better but didn't. It's all there on the page and a great reminder to every student and citizen of the United States of what we need to do to more forward positively as a nation.
