His second book, Insight Meditation, is my preferred read and the one that I buy for other beginning meditators. It is written some 16 years later and shows his ability to polish himself into a more flowing and engaging author, his progress as a meditator, and his deep engagement with the Dharma that underlies his dedication and his efforts. He is a serious Dharma practitioner; this book is not adulterated with contemporary philosophies. He communicates how the timeless and powerful principles taught by the Buddha can lead us toward total freedom within this lifetime.

Great book, but know what you're getting

This book is very good, but I think people should be aware of what they're buying before they buy it. This book discusses some Buddhist concepts that are behind Vipassana meditation, and discusses why people meditate, and what the short term and long term benefits to meditation are. What the book is short on, however, is the specifics of how to meditate, although it does discuss that in a short section. Instead of it focuses more on the why.

It's still a very enlightening and spiritual book that I recommend reading, which is why I gave it 4 stars. However if what you are looking for specifically is a step-by-step instructional, you may want to get another book in addition to this one.

EDIT: I wanted to edit my original review to add that I have since found a better book when it comes to actual instruction on Insight or Vipassana meditation: Mindfulness in Plain English. While I still recommend Goldstein's book when it comes to philosophically investigating the reasons behind meditation, Mindfulness in Plain English has more in terms of explicit step-by-step instructions for meditating, which I think would benefit someone totally new to the practice more.

The motivation I was looking for!

I started a daily morning meditation practice at the beginning of 2013 but in the Fall of 2014 it fell by the wayside. I felt I needed new motivation (and a good swift, kick in the pants). Just happened to read some reviews on Amazon and this course was highly recommended. So I bought it and have to say, it's exactly what I was looking for. I've completed a full week of daily (20 minutes) breathing meditations (Disc 1, track 1) and it's starting to fall into place. The hardest part for this Type A personality is learning to "just accept that you might lose focus on the breath but you just start over. Even if you have to start over a million times" in a 20 minute session, "that's the practice." Never thought I'd be able to sit still for 20 minutes either; well, it can be done! Very pleased and excited about the upcoming meditations. A+!

I was skeptical of this system, but carefully read the reviews, and decided to give it a shot.
I'm glad I did.
My wife had purchased a meditation product from Sylvan Learning, and it got me started, but I felt it was limited,and very basic, so I went online and found this.
Once it arrived, I was excited to try it out, and we have been using it daily since it arrived, about a week ago.
Our lives have been turned upside down in ways I never expected at this late stage of my life, and our stress levels have been over the top, with no relief in sight, for the past few years.
When trying the Sylvan meditation, I realized there could be something here for me, but it seemed too simplistic and limited.
Well, I'm happy to report the Insight Meditation program is working wonders for me!
I use it once or twice a day, some days, I will do 2 sessions, back to back, and I am enjoying a peace and calm like I have not had in years, perhaps ever. I am still on the first meditation, Breath Meditation, and see no reason to rush on to the next one yet. It's very difficult to just focus on one thing, my mind goes incessantly, but the cd is excellent at guiding me through, and bringing me back to the focal point.
I am sleeping well, whereas for the the past few years, I would be awake for hours each night, and to sleep through the night was an extremely rare occurrence.
Now, already, it's the norm.
I highly recommend this system to anyone interested in learning to meditate, and finding some inner peace in this crazy world.

Back to add to this review, date 7/14/2011.
I stopped using the meditation for some months, and found myself becoming filled with anxiety again.
A little background, I have just lost an excellent business I had spent 30 years building, and it's all been lost. No retirement, no job, back to square one.
Using this meditation is the only thing that has helped me find some peace within my daily nightmare.
I've lost the first CD, so I'm back to order another, since it's been so helpful, and I feel the need to go back to the basics.
The book was not something I have been able to get into, but the CD's are well worth the investment.
As I said, I have just ordered them again, just so I can use the first one, which I misplaced.
It will probably show up the week after I get my new one. LOL
I hope this helps you as much as it does me. It's not for everyone, my wife tried it with me in the beginning, but she did not care for it, so she dropped it, but I continued on and found what I need.

Back to update this review.
I have now started a new life, relocated to a warm climate where I've always wanted to live, and my new life is good.
It's been difficult, and I do miss the security of my old business, but I don't miss anything else about it, lol.
I've recently felt the need to move forward in my spiritual journey, and discovered another meditation cd that I really like a lot, so I thought I'd share it here, as I often get great leads from others reviews. It's the Wishes Fulfilled Meditation CD by Wayne Dyer. I also got the book, Wishes Fulfilled, and together with the cd, it's launched me on a whole new journey to inner peace harmony and self discovery.
I highly recommend them to anyone interested in going to the next level in their meditation and spiritual life.

Good guide to the practice on insight mediation - particularly strong on how pushing uncomfortable feelings emotionally (called aversion by Goldstein) can be worked with in meditation.

4 stars not 5 because I am more familiar with , and feeling a stronger connection to, the work of Jack Kornfield. I'm also not a huge fan of the aphoristic style of writing - the book has a lot of one and two page chapters.

This is a great book for beginners to Buddhist teaching. It even has flash cards to help you remember all the numbered ideas... 4 noble truths, 8 fold path, etc... There is also a meditation cd that has guided meditations. I bought it because my meditation group wanted to go through it as a group, and I didn't finish it because some of it seemed basic and I got distracted with my life (this is why I need to meditate!). But if you're looking for a nice, accessible, introduction, this is a good choice.

A nice smaller version of Sharon Saltzberg & Joseph Goldstein's full course. Includes a study guide, and six meditations tracks on two CD's. The CD tracks sound similar to the full version, but are approximately 20 minutes in length each instead of 40. Well organized, well presented, and well thought out. The audio is pleasant to listen to, and assists in the meditation. Certainly a definitive presentation of Mindfulness. A great deal at current prices.
