**Possible spoiler below**
The plot is essentially a murder mystery at its core, but the relationship between Nate and Trent and the seriously twisted "Community" were just as important. I do wish that Nate found out more about what his abilities were, or what I mean is I had hoped he would end up up being more if not as powerful as Chase. I don't know why, but as the story progressed I kept hoping that would come out - especially knowing his parentage (eww) and that Theo had additional powers of his own.
I know there are two future books planned for this series, so I hope we visit Nate and Trent again - even on a small scale. This series will be an automatic buy for me.
I’m a big fan of Santino Hassell’s work. Insight was a tremendous read, so far, it’s the first in my Best Of for this year. While a romance, it’s also paranormal, a murder mystery, and a road-trip adventure. The characterizations are spot on with the depth and nuance that I love about Santino’s stories, the kind that reach in and feel familiar in spectacular ways. The paranormal aspects were incredible — and this from a girl who shies away from that genre like it might electrocute me. The mystery thread surprised me, maybe blurb neglect, which I’m often guilty of, but the fact that he freaking NAILED it by keeping me guessing until the bitter end was phenomenal.
Nate starts of this book about as low as a man can go: like every country western gay song gone wrong: mom disappears when he was a child, he slept with abusive high school closeted guy, about to get evicted from apartment, working the dead end job in the high heat of a Texas summer, crazy relatives and someone stole his car....and then it just sort of heads over the cliff for him one...more...time, his psychic powers seem to go wonky on him, and his brother dies, and then he finds out some really crazy family history.
Can't really get any worse right?
Well, in the face of all that, is it any wonder that I was paranoid when Trent showed up...Sexy, confident, kind, helpful, positive in the vibes...Given Nate's life-long bad luck streak, Trent can't be this good?
Things quickly become very groovy with Nate and Trent, though, as they road trip for several days together. Nate is on a quest to find out what happened to his brother in New York....and he ends up really needing Trent at his back, as they uncover powerful forces for evil and good.
The adventure is good, some classic comic book action battles and sneakiness. Interesting secondary characters, maybe a few too many? But Hassell keeps things organized and the story moving. Several major players and bad guys that we hear about but don't ever meet....Will be interesting when they pop up in future books!
Highly recommended for those interested in a little psychic urban fantasy action in their mm romance. I always like more story with my romance, so worked for me. Professionally written and edited. Story told from Nate's third person point of view.
Some things I consider in MM romance book
Sexy scale 1-5:4
Explicit mm sex a handful of times. These guys have a nice easy road trip to start, where they first sleep together. Their attraction to each other seems pretty sudden and powerful...too powerful in a world of psychic influence? Maybe...Maybe not.
Likable MCs 1-5:3
Pleasant guys, kind to each other most of the time, stepping up to the challenge as a team. We learn a lot more about Nate, and I am certainly in his corner from the second that his car is stolen. Trent appears to be a straightforward nice guy.
Humor scale 1-5:2
Pleasant conversation, a few quips. Not a funny book.
Angst scale 1-5: 3
Well, Nate is miserable at the start...and he didn't seem to be able to take care of himself at all...it brought me down and by the time he decides to leave Texas, I think it's his only chance to survive the despair. Somehow, he pulls himself up to go see what happened to his brother, I am not sure where he found the inner strength, given that he was estranged from his brother. And each piece of news about his family and his brother and his powers just seemed to make it worse. See end of review for possible triggers/spoilers.
Like the sound of Insight?
Here are some other mm recommendations, with psychic and mystery features.
Jordan Castillo Price's Psycops series (large scale organizational conspiracies re psychics also a part of this series)
Harper Fox's Tyack and Frayne series
J. L. Merrow's Plumber's Mate series
All on my best mm series shelf.
Diana Copeland's Reason to Believe.
Psychic influence used attempt sexual assault and then actual sexual assault (emotional consequences under-emphasized) family history of incest)
Nate belongs to a family of psychics and maybe you think that's so cool! but when you live in a small town, your family is kind of messed up and you never really learned to control your abilities things aren't really cool. And that is how Nate feels and form the get go I was really hurting for him, his family sucks and has many many mysteries that affect him and he has no idea, the people in the town don't treat him right and he has a non existed love life but what I liked about him is that when he had a purpose and a goal to accomplish he want all out, he was determined and I admired that.
So, Nate has to go to NYC to investigate the disappearance of his twin brother except he has no way to get there and in come Trent who offers him to give him a ride to NYC where he happens to be going as well.
The interactions between Nate and Trent went from cold to really hot and I liked how Trent handled the entire thing, having feelings for a guy and on top of that accepting that the guy had some sort of psychics power. I think Trent is definitely my favorite out of the two just because of his attitude and how he showed Nate that he wasn't alone and that together was better than being apart.
The book is full of action, mysteries and very intriguing characters that I'm sure are going to make an appearance in later books.
