You could read this book for the encouraging words, the inspiring quotes and models of other writers' lives. In fact, I plan to keep my copy at the top of my Kindle queue, for quick hits of inspiration on days I'm flagging. Brian's writing is magically heartening . For the past couple weeks since reading about the idea, I now use Meditation to sense which Muse might appear, an idea I got from the book.
Bryan offers more. His exercises and suggestions lead you on a healing journey, building a foundation of self confidence. By asking yourself Bryan's questions, identifying and kindly acknowledging at your flaws, you begin accepting yourself as a weirdly normal, artistic human being. You begin to build the confident foundation you might be lacking if you are often desperate and joyless when it comes to sitting down to work or write. If you embrace your flaws as a driving strength, you can see how your flaws can be used as your passion, your reason to write or create . He guides you to release expectations and on how to let go; to accept where you are and to work to better your skills rationally.
Debunking fanciful myths, Brian describes a Muse who seems pretty ordinary, down and dirty, who lives in a basement chomping cigars. Even these kinds of Muses, he suggests, are full of inspiration and hold magic. He offers concrete ideas on how to woo a Muse, or more than one, in such a fond and humorous way, it raises your hopes and spirit. Particularly moving are the chapters describing his visit to the hometown of a person he considers a Muse and the hilltop where he encountered another Muse. He makes clear the effect both experiences had on his writing.
Any of the two dozen chapters can stand alone as an essay of encouragement, as a quick read. I encourage you to dig deep and take Bryan's challenges to heart. You'll find yourself growing as an artist your way, on your confident happy terms. We're not robots, as he likes to say.
Noting that not all advice "out there" is particularly good, he says it may not be that it's bad—it just may not be for you, or for you at the moment you read or hear it. "The only advice you'll ever need is the advice that matches who you are as a human being and where you are in your life right now, at this very moment. If someone's advice doesn't work for you, it's okay to recognize that and move on."
This is a valuable addition to your collection of books aimed at improving your writing. Hutchinson has a way of being a cheerleader and a check rein, a meditater and a cautioner. The chapters in Inspired Writer are short, varied, and teeming. The book should be read in small portions, and its points pondered before picking it up to read more. It is reality-based affirming stuff.
