So, I know it's made more for action and such, but I thought it would be fun to give to a bride or in a cosplay convention, which is why I wanted it. My hope was that I could hand it to the bride or groom and have them have some fun with it. It works well, but it's not perfect for that.
I like the build quality, it's easy to use, and a lot of times the video quality is great. It's definitely fun to mess around with the angles and zoom features like tiny world and ultra wide. Overall, I love the idea of the camera and will use it for certain situations.
Battery life seems great, I've used it for a couple events so far, and it's been solid. I bought a backup battery, but haven't needed to change it out during an event yet. Granted, I'm mainly a photographer, so I do use it somewhat sparingly. But overall I'd say it lasted for a solid couple hours of shooting with no issues.
The menus are easy to navigate, the touchscreen is responsive, and everything is durable on the unit.
A couple of quick things that I noted (again, these are issues really just in the way that I use it, might not be an issue for someone else):
1) You have to use the Insta360 editor to basically set up the shots the way you want and then export them to the correct format to be used in something like Premiere Pro. Not unexpected, but if you think about the editing process, this doubles my time essentially, especially if I'm using clips from other sources which I normally do. If you're just using the insta software, it'll be fine, no worries... but when I have to pre-edit my edits.... it's just a bit of a drain on my resources. (And this isn't really the fault of the device so much as it's just mildly frustrating for the way I plan to use it).
2) I noticed in some of my clips, a weird 'banding' effect (blur really) in certain situations. It made the footage unusable, and the worst part is I'm not sure where it came from. It's possible that it's not the fault of the device, but the lenses were clean and clear, unobstructed.
These are the only things that were an issue for me, and I'm sure that's being super particular and is unique to what I wanted to use it for. I still think it's a pretty awesome device and will allow me to create some cool shots for my uses.
For this 'review' I'm giving it 5 stars, but for me personally, It might be more like 4.4 stars because of my intended use. I battled back and forth over this or GoPro, and decided to try this as something different since I've used GoPros for a long time. Maybe I just need to do more experimenting.

Image quality comparo vs. X3
First of all, this X4 does have better resolution than its predecessor, the X3:The first screenshot is from the X3, the second from the X4. The difference is most easily seen in the sign's borders; the X3 borders are rougher, while the X4 captures the borders more clearly. The colors also seem better from the X4, and the background is clearer.Overall my experience has been that the X4 has slightly better image qualilty than the X3, both in resolution and color accuracy, but it's an evolutionary improvement, not a revolutionary one.So if you need to save some money and get the X3 instead, that would be completely reasonable---the differences are minor and mostly only visible at when zooming into a small area, which is not a strong point for either camera---they both do better at wider angles.One thing I do like on the X4 versus the X3 is that your videos are stored in a single file each, regardless of length. With the X3, long videos are broken up and stored in multiple files, which basically stops the recording for a few seconds while it saves each file. This risks losing precious moments.Other than those differences, these are very similar cameras. The X4 is slightly larger, although not enough to really even be noticeable and you might actually find it easier to handle than the shorter X3.The X4 might also get a tad bit warmer, probably just from the extra power required to capture 8K, but that hasn't caused any problems for me in my testing to date. The company does recommend that you only capture in 8K if you have some breeze to help cool the camera, so bear that in mind also.Overall this is a great camera but so is the X3. If you can afford it, the X4 is cutting edge and I do recommend it, but if not the X3 is such a close second you're going to be happy with it as well, and both cameras benefit from excellent customer-support.The free Insta360 Studio app for post-production editing on your desktop is also quite good. Between that and Davinci Resolve I've been able to produce some really great short videos for YouTube (after a small learning curve for Insta360 Studio and a rather big one for Davinci Resolve).You can do some quick AI-guided editing right in the phone app and post directly to social media, but for anything more serious you'll need desktop video-editing software, and if you're not already experienced with that you'll have those learning curves as well.As always with these cameras, I strongly recommend to buy the insurance. I actually purchased two X3's, one with insurance one without. I eventually smashed them both:With insurance I got an instant refund and had a new camera the next day. Without insurance, I not only had to pay for the repairs (which were quite expensive) but it also took forever to get the camera back. I got the insurance on this X4 and it gives me tremendous peace-of-mind.I think that's it; I hope that helps you decide!
