If a pressure release valve gets blocked in a non-electronic stovetop pressure cooker, there is nothing very safe it can do -- some designated spot will melt, causing a mess and potential burns.
Electronic cookers have full control over the heating power, so they can turn just turn the power off when the temperature goes out of bounds.
The main innovation in this electronic cooker one can program it to automatically execute "recipes", which are a sequence of actions. Each action is of the form "heat to temperature xxx", "heat to pressure high/low/medium", "hold temperature xxx for yyy minutes", "hold pressure high/medium/low for yyy minutes", "heat at xxx% power for yy minutes".. This can be handy at many times. In my previous electronic pressure cooker Cuisinart CPC-600 6 Quart 1000 Watt Electric Pressure Cooker (Stainless Steel) , I could not adjust the "keep warm" temperature, or disable it. Leaving rice for a long time at "keep warm" would cause the bottommost layer of rice to stick and become very hard. On the other hand, after cooking chicken curry, I would have to manually ensure that it stays warm enough (150F or more) to disallow the growth of bacteria. Now I can just write recipes that can ensure the right kee-warm temperature after cooking, or just totally turn off heat after cooking. Also, some recipes, like Indian Biryanis, call for high-heat cooking initially and then low heat for a long time. With this cooker, I can just write a "recipe" with the appropriate sequence of actions, send it to the cooker, and forget about the Biryani.
The Android app leaves much to be desired. It comes with a collection of recipes. It also provides a GUI for users to design their own recipes as a sequence of actions. One problem is that the inbuilt recipes cannot be deleted. This causes a lot of clutter. My biggest annoyance is with the app is that there is no way to export all the recipes and import them on a different phone. If you decide to change your phone or factory reset it, you may loose all the recipes that you wrote. A customer support person told me that it is possible to export recipes one by one and import them one by one on the new device. This is unacceptable to me. So I figured out a workaround for rooted phones:
On the old phone, copy /sdcard/SmartCooker and /data/data/com.instantpot.smartcooker/databases/cookbook.db to a safe place, e.g. Dropbox. You may need root access to read the latter file. The latter file is a database that contains tables for recipes and also for the entire cooking history!
The former directory contains many directories -- one for each recipe. These directories contain textual descriptions of recipes and other metadata such as pictures of recipes.
On the new phone, first copy the backed up /sdcard/SmartCooker to the same place. Then install the smartpot app. Then change the permission of
/data/data/com.instantpot.smartcooker/databases/cookbook.db to 777. To do this, if you have terminal program, execute "su; chmod 777 /data/data/com.instantpot.smartcooker/databases/cookbook.db". Then replace the contents of this file by the contents of cookbook.db from the old phone. I used "cat oldFile > cookbook.db". Then restore the permission of this file using "su; chmod 660 /data/data/com.instantpot.smartcooker/databases/cookbook.db". It is very important to ensure that the new version of cookbook.db has the exact same ownership and permissions as before (just after fresh install of the app on the new phone).
Then, when I opened the smartpot app on my new phone, I could see all the recipes I made on the old phone. Also, my entire cooking history was intact.
Also, by manually editing cookbook.db (using a Sqlite3 browser) to delete the records in the "recipe" table, one can get the inbuilt recipes to disappear from the app.
Wishlist:
1) The android app needs a lot of improvements. It should be possible (without the complex hacks above) to remove the inbuilt recipes and export/import ALL of the user data.
2) The actions corresponding to the physical buttons on the cooker (e.g. rice, porridge) should also be customizable. Some of them are woefully inefficient in my opinion. It should possible to use the app to assign a recipe to any of those buttons.
3) The highest possible value for xxx in the action "hold temperature xxx for yyy minutes" is only 212F, which is too low for some dishes.
4) The cooker could warn (e.g. beep) if it detects contradictory settings such as steam vent being open in the high pressure mode.
5) The bluetooth protocol that the app uses to communicate with cooker should be made public, so that other people can write much better apps, for a wider range of devices. If they just release the sources of their crappy Android app, it would become much easier to reverse engineer the protocol. I requested the customer support for the sources of the android app, but they declined.
The reason I went with the "smart" version of this machine was specifically to make bone broth. There is a script that was written by Laura Pazzaglia for bone broth--from your smart-phone or tablet google bone broth and her name and the recipe will pop up--you can click a button that will save the script to the Instant Pot app and from your phone you can run the script. The advantage to this over the regular DUO or LUX versions is that to make the bone broth, you need to vary the temperature and pressure release, and otherwise you would have to do it manually every so often, and it's much easier to just "set it and forget it."
It would be super-cool if you could connect with this thing long-distance, through wifi. As it is, your smartphone or tablet needs to be in range to communicate with the Instant Pot, but I just think it would be so great if you could put ingredients in on your way out the door in the morning, and then use your phone to turn it on when you are on your way home.
I have been telling everyone about my fabulous new machine. I love to cook, but sometimes I get lazy or time-pressured, and just order in for convenience. With this machine, I've been able to create delicious and healthy meals very quickly. Cooking stews, grains and legumes is fast, and there is also something about the technique of pressure cooking which seems to meld the ingredients even more than long cooking on a stove. I practiced macrobiotics for years, and they were always on about how much easier life is with a pressure cooker. The stovetop ones always kind of freaked me out, so this is my very first pressure cooker, and I can't believe I've gone so long without one!! These days I've found that no one diet per se works for me---I was paleo for a while, but then I would crave grains and binge on refined carbs like rice noodles from the delicious thai place down the road--so I've recommitted myself to a diet of my own making---focusing on whole gluten-free grains, legumes, veggies and grass-fed meat. This tool is PERFECT for me---cooking whole grains and legumes, and trying to incorporate a plant based diet takes time, especially if you want to soak your seeds, nuts, grains and legumes (which is recommended to get the phytic acid off--it's an enzyme inhibitor and is slightly carcinogenic).
I LOVE the yogurt making function---I did a lot of research on these Instant Pots before ordering---if you don't really care about bone broth (which you should, unless you're a vegan---bone broth is super-healthy for your immune system, gut and bone health--all of that collagen is regenerating--think of it as a fountain of youth)---but if you don't care for bone broth or other scripted recipes, then the less-expensive Duo or Lux would probably work just fine. The Duo has the benefit of a yogurt setting, and the Lux, which is cheaper again, does not.
Some other reviewers have had problems pairing their devices, so far I have not. I wish it were compatible with my Kindle Fire HDX, but so far the App is not available in the Kindle App store (maybe this will change--HINT, HINT??!!). It works fine from my iPhone 6s. I have not tried to create my own scripts yet---I do wish the manual had a little more detail for this--or the app---it doesn't seem very intuitive, but I haven't really tried too hard yet, and again, I've only owned it a couple of days.

Not so great - The programmed recipes were generally not that good. For example the yogourt pre-programmed setting left me with a slimy output. I commonly make my own on the stovetop, and this problem is due to insufficient heating during the 'boil' stage. This problem is because the temperature sensor is right next to the element. When heating quickly it reads much higher than the actual liquid temperature and will underheat things unless you stir constantly. I bought the instant pot to avoid having to monitor the yogourt, so this wasn't great.
-Quick start manual for bluetooth setup skips a necessary step (online instructions were correct)
- Sealing ring tends to jam under the wire retaining ring, preventing a good seal unless it's loosened before each use. Did not realise this at first, got some bad results. Instruction should be added to manual to check it moves freely each time.
Changes that would be good, and could be made via software
- Silent mode option
- Improvements to ipad interface: you can't erase recipes or recipe steps. When you add a recipe step it is always added at the end, so if you want to add an intermediate step (e.g. to slow down heating stages) you have to start over.
- Lack of flexibility in heating settings; options are 25,50,75,100%. Why not intermediate values?
- No gradient control. An option 'heat to X°C over Y min' would be nice.
- Basic option to heat at X°C and hold without writing a recipe program would be nice.
Hardware changes
- Stronger heating element would be nice. For example you can't make popcorn, the temp doesn't get high enough.
- Inaccurate measurement of temperature, particularly when heating at high rates could be solved by a second thermocouple located elsewhere in the unit, but I can see this would be technically difficult.
- Larger smart units would be great. I keep having to cook beans in batches- It can make about 2 can's worth at once.
Summary;
A great piece of equipment, happy I bought it, and an excellent value. The ability to write a program is why I bought this, and allowed me to create good results for yogourt after some tinkering. I'm having a lot of fun using this, and find it very handy for beans. Software works okay, but could use improvement.
