In this case, I have a desktop computer that I use in specific opportunities. Over the same desktop I have a docking station that I use for my notebook. So as you can guess, I share keyboard, video and mouse, for which I have a KVM switch. My problem is that having only one RJ45 jack installed on the wall, I want to have connection from my laptop without having to unplug the workstation.
The solution: this RJ45 splitter allows to have both the workstation and the dock connected to the same jack. I only have to be careful of no turning on both computers, to avoid networking problems. And in the case I need them both for whatever reason, I just connect the laptop via wifi, and problem solved.
The only detail I found is that both ethernet cables to be connected should have the same norm (standard color sequence).
What the product description didn’t say is that you will be limited to 10 Mbps. This is ok for the average user who uses their network for internet surfing and streaming, but if you’re into the transferring of large files then I recommend using an additional router/switch on the receiving end of the Ethernet cable or run another Ethernet cable. Even Wi-Fi has much better speed if you’re in good range.
I will keep this splitter to connect my Smart TV & Laptop in my bedroom but once I relocate my router from the living room to a central location at my home I will no longer have need for the splitter. It works great and the only time I get disconnected from the network is when I turn on the other device that is connected to the splitter.
The cable running from the modem/router to the room has two male ends so it plugged right into the system. I had purchased two other gray cables from a local retail store. When I turned on a system, it would say "no connection", and then I would have to unplug the cable and replug it into the other outlet on the splitter. This of course was annoying. I remembered a couple friends of mine had connection trouble with their XBOX and it turned out to be the Ethernet cable. I changed both gray cables to the blue ones, and now both systems have no connection trouble.
One of the two outlets will connect internet to a device, but the connection is broken if another ethernet cable is even inserted in the the other outlet leading to another device (just the cable itself, even without a 2nd device!). This makes the product no better than a simple connector (actually worse, because it's confusing and only one of the two ports works).
I bought two of these and it was exactly the same story for both.
Also some reviewers mentioned how it's possible to hook one splitter to two ports on a switch or router, have one long line between, and split the signal with another splitter on the other end of the long line. Tried that also, and it too did not work.
