I'd like to be alerted if my garage door is open ...

Kit arrived yesterday, installed it all on the same day. Biggest limitation I've found so far is that there is no option to set time based alert windows. I'd like to be alerted if my garage door is open for more than 15 minutes but only monday through friday and only between 7a and 7p (yes, I got the garage door kit as well). I see this as a huge limitation. Same holds true with my front door sensor and motion sensor - I only wanna be alerted about activity between 10p and 7a. From what I can tell thus far, this system won't do it. I also don't care for the lack of customizability of module shortcuts in the app (example: garage door button in the app says "ON/OFF" and it can't be changed to "OPEN/CLOSED"). There's also no customizability of status "lights" in the app - example: garage door is closed, I'd like it to show green; it shows blank. Leak sensor is dry, I'd like to customize it to show green; it too, shows blank. Very much a 'no news is good news' type scenario. Other than the mentioned limitations, I like this kit very much. I do hope they'll fix these issues in upcoming app releases - but if they don't, at least they provide the documentation to allow me to write my own app (another pro).

Installation was relatively easy. Did have to add the same device twice (water leak sensor, dimmer and motion sensor) to get them working though, not sure why. Setting port forwarding was also straight forward. I tried Belkin WeMo before, this is definitely easier to setup. The biggest problem I have with this system is that I plan to set up 3 motion sensors and 6 water leak sensors and would want notifications only when I am away from home. There is no macro setting that allow me to turn on/off event notifications on demand. I supposed that should be a fundamental function, given this is a home automation/security system. It should also be a relatively easy function to add from Insteon. Talked to support that I have to get the ISY994 and the associated PLM to get that function, which is another 3-400 bucks. Not sure I would spend that much $ on that. Will have to do the tedious task to enable notification from each motion sensors. I can leave the water leak sensor notification on since I should not get any unless there is leak. So bottom line, my review is mixed on this product, until Insteon provides that notification on/off function/button/macro.

Hub I (2242-222) included

One quick and maybe handy information for future buyers is that this pack came with the old version of the HUB (2242-222) not the HUB II (2245-222).
Because of this, The instructions/procedures at the user manual available at INSTEON are a little bit different. Look for the user manual for the "2242-222" instead.
After a few tries + one or two factory resets the system is up and running.

Insteon is far to complicated. I had high hopes. The camera styling looks so outdated. It's also complicated trying to get it to work over the Internet. I have a Canary which was super simple, and I wish Insteon would figure out how to be just as easy to configure.

Occasional glitchy, but overall very satisfied. Not hard to set up if you understand port forwarding. Also, find out from your isp (or through trial and error) what ports IN to your house are passed. Mine blocks port 80 and a few others, but still no problem to set up with DDNS.

UPDATE 4-1-2015:
Insteon is discontinuning SMS and email messages, notifications will only be by push notification. Presently on Apple devices, there is only one default tone for ALL push notifications, so finding out that one of your doors is open get the same priority notification as a ball score (or similar). This may keep their services free but you get what you pay for. I wouldn't mind paying a monthly fee, for a bit more service. But to turn your lights on and off, it's still OK. In comparison to IRIS by Lowes, the free part is fairly comparable, but Insteon simply can't compare with IRIS features.

This is a great deal as you can experiment with home automation with a wide range of sensors, and the included hub is pretty much thrown in for free.

I set up the water sensor first, it was very painless. Was on vacation with my wife, and got an email saying there was a water leak. Called a neighbor, and my sump pump had died, and our basement was filling with water. A call to a plumber had things fixed in a couple of hours, absolutely no harm to the basement. Had it not been for the sensor, we would have returned to a basement flooded with very muddy water. Certainly saved enough money to pay for this starter kit.

Needless to say, I'm sold on Insteon and home automation. The only weak spot in this kit is the hub, which is pretty rudimentary, but essentially free. I'll be adding more sensors soon, and upgrading to an ISY 994 controller.
