Turn off power at the service panel and remove the existing wall switch.	Unfold all of the wires from the junction box. Separate the black wires and cap them with wire nuts.	Turn on power and use a voltage detector to identify the live wire; this is your line wire.


Turn off power and connect the corresponding wires from the junction box with the Insteon Wall Switch and cap them with wire nuts. Wire nuts are included.	Install Insteon Wall Switch, attach the wall plate and turn on power. Wall plate is sold separately.	If you have the Insteon Hub, follow the on-screen instructions in the Insteon app to add On/Off Switch. Insteon Hub is sold separately.

READ THIS BEFORE BUYING!

I am very pleased with this product (hence the 5-star review), but you REALLY need to understand how they work before you buy the wrong combination of units for your application. I highly recommend visiting Insteon's forums and reading up a bit before you hit that buy button.

This item is the 2477D - It is labeled as Dual Band. This means it has the ability to communicate through two different means. Via the power lines and via RF frequency. Some of the products this company sells only communicate via one-method or the other. The 2476S and 24776D for example only communicate via power lines. And the remote switches (i.e. the 2444A3 and 2444A4) only communicate via RF.

To make these products work, you have to have a Dual Band unit installed in your house that translates RF signals from the transmitters and sends it to the other switches via the power line. I had to go on the forums to learn this. Also, another fun fact for laymen like myself. The 220V power coming into your house is split at your breaker panel into two halves. That's why all your standard outlets are 110V. Your dryer outlet receives power from both halves of the panel, which is why that's a 220V outlet. I mention this because the company that makes this and experienced installers recommend that you have at least one dual band unit on EACH HALF of your 220V system to improve reliability of remote signals.

My point is, know what you're buying and do some research to properly map out your circuits and your need for dual band (2477 etc.), single band (2476, etc.), access points (2443, etc.) and RF switches (2444A3, 2444A4, etc.) before you buy to save yourself some confusion and frustration with this product.

End result is great though!

I have just finished installing about 14 of these switches all over my house (and another dozen Insteon dimmers). Installation was pretty easy even though I was new to home wiring (and despite the fact that I'm an electrical engineer). After installing over two dozen new Insteon wall switches, I've become pretty comfortable with installing these; now it only takes me about 5-10 minutes to install or replace one of these. More time is spent pushing the wire and wire nuts back into the wall and checking that the switch is flush and level with the wall...enough about me...

This switch is a quality product. Nothing feels "cheap" about this. The clicking is satisfying and doesn't feel hollow but like a good mechanical switch. It only requires a light touch to activate.

The switch is very attractive. I think it looks much classier than the GE/Jasco Z-wave switches, which have buttons and other things offset and not arranged symmetrically. The Insteon "set" button is centered below the rocker switch and remains inactive and unlit except during linking. The LED "gauge" indicator is present on this on/off switch but only lights up the bottom (off) or top (on) LED. I wasn't crazy about this since there is no point to the indicators in between but I've gotten used to it. This brings me to some of my minor negatives with this switch. With a mix of a dozen on/off switches and a dozen dimmers, I can't tell which is a dimmer and which is an on/off switch inside my house yet...another minor negative is that those "indicators" are just plastic light guides to the actual white LED's located inside the switch. The issue with this is that there is a lot of light leakage so that you never see just one of those dots lit. You can adjust the indicator brightness via the Insteon Hub or any other method that lets you control the indicator brightness so that you reduce this leakage.

The size of this switch is comparable to the Lutron dimmers that I've installed. In terms of other Insteon switches, from smallest to largest: Insteon 2-wire dimmer, Insteon dimmer switch, Insteon on/off switch (this). The WeMo wall switch is the largest wall switch I have and the hardest to install for me because of its size.

One last note...I think another reviewer noticed this as well but these aren't completely white. They are slightly off-white. I would NEVER have been able to tell except for the fact that I installed these with a Lutron Claro wall plate which is glossy white. You can't really see the color difference unless the room is very brightly lit up.

I am extremely happy with the performance and quality so far. I haven't had any out of the box failures in the over two dozen Insteon wall switches that I've installed so far.

To wrap up, I have WeMo, Insteon, Z-wave, Nest and Hue in my home but so far I'm most impressed with the Insteon system for consistent quality and performance. I am using the Insteon Hub and Revolv to manage my network but I'm about to transition to Indigo for the Mac.

Until I purchased this switch this week, I had only installed regular 3-wire Insteon switches, to circuits having a white neutral wire. My home is relatively new, and every switch I had previously replaced had a neutral wire.

I then encountered a circuit for hallway lighting that had all hot wires in the box (the neutral must have run only to the lights. So, the switchbox had two hot wires and a bare ground wire. I found comments others on the Internet who recommended connecting the white wire on the Insteon switch to the house ground wire in this situation. Not only does this violate electrical codes, it can be very dangerous. So, I picked up one of these 2-wire switches.

From the front, the 2-wire switchlinc is identical to all other switchlincs. However, the back of the unit is totally different. The unit overall is slimmer, leaving more space in the electrical box. Furthermore, there are only two wires (power line and output load) and the bare ground wire. Installed in minutes, and synced with my keypadlincs without any issue.

The only tradeoff with this switch is that is wireless communication ONLY (see "RF Remote Control" in the item name). Older Insteon switches transmit control signals through your power lines. To do this, the switch needs the neutral wire. Newer "dual band" switches transmit through the power lines AND by wireless RF communication. The reason is just for increased reliability.

****Because this switch does not transmit over power lines, you must have at least one other dual-band Insteon device on your network and within a decent range (I try to stay within 20-30 feet between any two wireless devices).**** Otherwise, power-line only switches will not communicate with this switch, and vis-versa.

I wouldn't invest in any of these switches before determining that you definitely need them, but if needed this product performs great.
