Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller has always stuck to songs of heartbreak, I-done-bad confessionals, and the occasional exercise in rave-up solipsism. Regardless of which of those areas he's explored, he's set his lyrics in flawless melodies and delivered them with infectious energy. With The Instigator, Miller is at least partially on his own. Here he fronts a band that's less about fast-paced rocking and more about pushing his passionate yowl to the fore. He's still wondering if he's "gonna be lonely for the rest of my life" ("Come Around"), and he's doing so with such heart-rending conviction that you can't stop listening. And Miller's still creating melodies that shine in any setting. Straying from the guitar/bass/drums setup of the 97's, Miller employs organ on the tender "World Inside the World" and a decorous acoustic backing on the midtempo, pop-radio-friendly "Point Shirley" and "Four-Eyed Girl." Miller's energy bursts forth on the opener, "Our Love," and on his lo-fi paean to Chicago, "The El." Rhett Miller's solo debut is a fine example of melody and smart lyrics combined into an admirable listening experience. Lines like, "My friend is trapped in a shame spiral" and "Every one of us has a secret rhythm beating like a drum," create a feeling intelligence while each song has a musical setting that provides the listener with pleasure. Name dropping Kafka and Dellio make sure you're paying attention and songs like "The El" that approximate train sounds reminiscent of "The Orange Blossom Special" just end up putting a smile on your face. Nor does Miller forget the emotional components of songs; many here deal with relationships at all stages sung like a man who has an understanding of what can go right or wrong with them. This is just a well balanced effort from an artist who has decided to follow his own muse. Occasionally not everything works on the same level, "Four Eyed Girl" is just a throwaway and "I Want To Live" is far too strident, but these are the exceptions. It is a song like "Your Nervous Heart," with the singer's tentative approach to a loved one's anger at the day's end that make this one a keeper with my hope that Miller will provide more of the same in the future.
PS. THE BELIEVER is even better!

Rhett, your face looks reeeel pretty on the face of a record, but jeez, bring back Murry and the boyz? I miss the raw energy streaming from the early old 97s records. What has happened to the clever lyrics and pleasing rock twangs coming from the good ole boys. This album sings sell-out poppy love ballads. Don't buy it!

Well, it's obvious that Rhett has fallen in love....with cliches! The tunes are perfectly crafted to suit the best of pop songs, but the lyrics? Give me a break! The same old tired trite turn of phrase repeated over and over ad nauseam does not make for a great song or show any imagination whatsoever. He wrote better lyrics when he was little teeny bopper folkie. He can do better.
This would have been better had it been released as an instrumental.

Got to hear the stripped down versions of many of these
fine cuts recently during Rhetts opening of Tori Amos's tour in New Hampshire.
I most likely would have passed this all by if it
weren't for our local Triple AAA stations playing
the hell out of "Come around" his first single on
"The Instigator", great cut too! Just hearing the studio versions of these
just made many of these cuts come to life and I'm also enjoying
his last studio effort with his band, the 97's (Satiellite Rides)as well. Having discovered this singer now I want to listen to Rhett and his band. Just watching this guy and his quirky moves and his
honest songs about love and the lack of it is a kick, a great
find, sick of the radio anymore!!

The only difference between 9 and 7 is 2...too much fun

Rhett Miller is the pop soul of the yin and yang of Old 97's alt-country elegance. Here Rhett goes solo and can come forth with his songcraftery. Rhett is equal parts Paul McCartney, Paul Westerberg, Paul Schaffer, and Les Paul. He knows his way around a song and knows how to keep you singing loud and laughing all the way to the watering trough.

"Hover," stands out as pure pop confectionery...but the sugar is addicting and not empty. Rhett smirks behind his lyrics and they reach at moments into stand-up comedy cultural riffs. For instance, "Wrapped up in each other, making loving out of nothing, like the Air Suppliers said." It don't get much better than that for wittery all the way from Dallas.

There does not exist a single weak track on Miller's "The Instigator." It's a disc you won't find yourself pushing the skip button...ever. It's repeat play on a twelve-hour drive good!

For wit, listen to this sh__, "Richard thought his letters to his lover Matilda were a mess, he should have quit before he had written the address, they made love on the mezzanine, her husband was his friend." Rich, I tell you, rich.

It is difficult to listen to any songs on Miller's offing here and not sing-along. Pt. Shirley, The El, Our Love, This is What I do are all so truly truly good. Miller has more musicianship in his little pinkie than Jessica Simpson has air between her ears. The highlight of the album goes to "Nervous Heart," which is a slow burner low-fi true-ism of a song. "You gotta give the world the finger, and sing a happy song. Can I kiss your furrowed brow and calm your nervous heart?" My brother hipped me to this CD and the 97's and for that I'll never forgive him. Now I'm ruined on most everything else and find others that I previously enjoyed falling short.

Sing on dear Rhett, sing on. The rest of us will sing right along with you until your old or until your 97 whichever comes first.

Rhett Miller is the frontman of the Old 97's, and 'The Instigator' is his first solo album, released back in 2002. In quite the departure from his day job, Rhett Miller embraces the kind of mainstream rock/pop sound of say Counting Crows, for what is almost a perfect little album. 'The Instigator' also has a similar sound to that of Evan Dando's 'Baby I'm Bored', which Jon Brion also produced. The front half of the record is very strong indeed. 'Our Love', 'This Is What I Do', the amazing 'Come Around', 'Things That Disappear' and 'World Inside The World' are each in their own way, great songs. There's nothing wrong with the rest of the album, rather that i don't think it quite lives up to the standards set by the first five tunes! There is a big difference between a Rhett Miller album and an Old 97's album, which was obviously the intention of Rhett, and though i think that i still prefer 'Too Far To Care', 'The Instigator' is definitely worth investigating whether you're an Old 97's fan or not.
