She is even back playing now. Her kidney condition will not go away but she is happy and better, that is what matter to me at this point. Thanks!
For those wondering how far out the expiry runs on this particular product, the expiration dates stamped on the cans I received are dated for December 2018, for both the case of Salmon and the case of Chicken. The food was fresh upon opening - very moist, no foul odors, etc - which sometimes happens when ordering pet foods online, but fortunately I received fresh cases of each flavor ordered! The texture of the food is more of a pate', it's not very chunky at all, and has some vegetables mixed in with the meat such as chopped carrots and whole peas (I mash them up and mix them in so the cat will consume them for optimal nutrition). There is a thin sauce in the can as well which helps keep the food moist.
Nature's Variety Instinct is formulated with high quality protein and is both grain-free, and gluten-free, making it easy to digest and in turn, provides optimal nutrition. Our senior cat needed to lose some weight (she weighed 17 pounds before starting her on Nature's Variety) and she managed to lose just over 3 pounds with a combination of Nature Variety's Instinct Canned Wet Food (and pouches) paired with Nature's Variety Ultimate Protein freeze dried chicken kibble! The food has made her so much more playful and active which has assisted her in her weight loss journey. She is looking much leaner and healthier thanks to the wholesomeness and well balanced diet offered by Nature's Variety! Her fur was extremely oily before starting her on this diet, now, its soft, silky and smooth and she does not shed as often as she used to too!
What I like most about Nature's Variety is that it is high in QUALITY nutrition, very close to a cat's instinctual diet, it's also easy to digest, and it clearly tastes good in our girl's opinion! Overall we are pleased with Nature's Variety and plan on transitioning our younger cats to it too :) I know cost is an issue for many, myself included, however I find Nature's Variety is very much worth the cost as the benefits outweigh the long term potential consequences and associated health costs of feeding a low quality commercial cat food diet.
I highly recommend Nature's Variety for anyone looking to assist their cat with some weight loss, or even provide a simple improvement in the quality of their life! It's also beneficial for cats who have food allergies too. For those who are curious of the ingredients, I have included the ingredients for both the Salmon flavor and Chicken flavor below:
Salmon, Salmon Broth, Pork Liver, Ground Flaxseed, Montmorillonite Clay, Eggs, Peas, Potassium Chloride, Carrots, Salt, Lecithin, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, LAscorbyl2Polyphosphate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Biotin, Riboflavin Supplement, dCalcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Dried Kelp, Tricalcium Phosphate, Taurine, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Sodium Selenite, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide), Artichokes, Cranberries, Pumpkin, Tomato, Blueberries, Broccoli, Cabbage, Kale, Parsley

Since he's been eating this wet food twice a day, paired with the dry Instinct Limited Kibble, he's done a 180. No longer is he sick, suffering from IBS or having a tummy that is always churning. He is now a happy cat. My female cat is along for the ride. I can't put this food down fast enough for them at feeding time.
The texture of the 3 oz can is fairly smooth. You'll see in the photo, that I do break it up as my cats are picky about eating. I love that you see actual peas and carrots in their food. The consistency has had very little variation. I have had them both on this food since early January 2016. One bonus is that the food is so well balanced that they are getting everything they need and nothing that they don't!
I would recommend this food to anyone who has a cat with sensitivities.
I like the fact that this Instinct beef doesn't contain fish, guar gum and other starches, nor coloring. The latter makes it look weird (grayish-mud-brown), and quite unappetizing; but then, I'm not the one eating it! (It doesn't smell particularly good, either.) What I don't like is that it does contain stuff like flax seed, tomato, pumpkin, cranberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale, parsley. At least those are foods -- human foods! -- and not chemicals, but, come on, Nature's Variety, those are just not things that cats naturally eat. (Cats are obligate carnivores: they eat, and must eat, meat; period.) So what are these human vegetables doing in a "premium" cat food? That makes no sense to me, except for the company to save money on that last 5% of ingredients instead of making it all meat.
I recently bought a good meat grinder and am now using home-ground chicken (with the ground bones and giblets and an additional nutritional supplement) as the basis for my cat food, which is healthier and much cheaper than commercial food. I haven't gone raw yet (a couple of the cats didn't like raw when I tried it on them) but we're working toward that. At this point I'm adding some commercial cat food to my chicken in their transition, and may continue to do that for some time. This is a good cat food for that purpose.
