We are in southeast Virginia, and we can get cold snaps where it's below freezing for a several nights. I decided to purchase just one bucket (I have two horses) to see how it worked. Thus far, on nights when the temperatures were in the mid-high 20s, in a non-heated barn, the product has worked excellently. I was concerned that my OTTB, who is very picky about water, might not want to use it (the casing is larger and takes up more space in the stall than a regular bucket; thus, it is best placed close to a corner). I have not yet used the flotation device, as I wanted him to become accustomed to the casing and deeper bucket, first. As soon as we secured the casing to the wall (I ordered the cheerful blue casing), he immediately approached the insulated bucket and drank from it; it is now his preferred bucket, although he has a regular bucket in his stall as well. It keeps the water slightly warmer, but even when it's chilly and the regular buckets have some ice, the water in this one remains liquid, if cold. The product works well. Even if there is a little bit of ice, it doesn't ice over completely as other buckets do, or the ice is so thin, it only requires the touch of a finger to break it. I am very pleased with the product. If you live in a colder climate, you will probably need to use the flotation device, which is like a large saucer that sits on top of the water and lets some water through on the top. Water chills from the top down, so this flotation device keeps the bucket temperature warmer. Another advantage of the insulated bucket is that it will keep water cooler on hot days -- it works both ways, of course. The bucket is simply taken out for cleaning, and the casing can be easily wiped out, or even drained, if necessary, by removing a plug at the bottom. I recommend this product.
Update: 1/21/14 -- I just received my second insulated bucket (which I ordered for my other horse). An excellent product that works. If you add a little warm water (on cold days), the insulated casing will keep the water tepid for some time.
Again, in very cold weather (tonight it's in the teens here) there may be some ice, but it's usually very thin. The water has remained in liquid form when the temperatures were down to about the low 20sF. This product is worth the investment.
