Anyway, my only complaint is with Google not keeping youtube completely up to date with this so it really has not taken off yet but is very cool to see in VR. The youtube compression is pretty terrible also which they should really do something about (but the raw camera files look great)
However this camera is for early adopters who are okay in terms of dealing with growing pains.
By pains I mean little things like not having a tripod included. By not having a tripod you're left holding the camera in an awkward position so that your hand/fingers don't appear in the video. If you hold the camera like a regular point & shoot (or your cell phone) then your fingers will appear in the video.
Another awkward area comes from when you turn side to side with this camera. The camera and/or Google's VR180 format doesn't automatically change the field of view for the viewer if they're watching the video in VR180. This means that if you record a video and then turn 90 degrees clockwise the person watching the video in VR180 needs to turn 90 degrees clockwise or else they'll be staring at a black void.
It's not intuitive. And there's no way that I know of to keep the viewer seeing what the camera sees. However it seems like it'd be ideal if the viewer had the option of staying still while seeing what the camera was pointing at and then having the option to move their head around a little to see other details — versus having to know which way to look if the camera moves.
Essentially this camera should only be shot in one direction and you shouldn't turn/pan. You can turn/pan if they're watching it as a regular YouTube video but if the viewer is looking at it in VR then they'll need to know (somehow) that they need to turn. Maybe Google will add future cues to let people know they need to turn but for now it's a pain.
Holding the camera and trying not to turn are the two biggest pain points. The lowlight capabilities are fine. The overall video quality is good as well. In an ideal world the field of view would be slightly larger than 180 degrees and either a grip or a steady cam-like tripod would be included so you can more easily record videos.
Another thing is that for whatever reason it takes a couple of seconds to turn on and be ready for recording video. I'm not sure if it's trying to get an internet connection or what. But several times I was recording or thought I was recording, only to see a few minutes later that I wasn't recording. I turned the camera on, waited for the blue light, and then hit the button to start recording. I think sometimes there's a green light instead of a blue light and I'm not really sure what that means.
A flashing red light, similar to other cameras, to indicate that it's recording would be a simple way to indicate that it's recording. As it stands, the light blue light is kind of hard to see when you're outside. And the camera works best when you're outside and it's sunny.
It'll be interesting to see how this camera stacks up to the Yi Horizon and other future camera models. I think LG is coming out with one. Ideally Panasonic comes out with one as they have a number of cameras with great video recording features.
p.s. - The lack of a screen is a pain too. After reading other reviews it reminded me of several clips in which the person I was filming was slightly out of frame. There wasn't a screen so I guessed and it turns out I was wrong. They really need a screen on this type of camera because otherwise you may miss moments you'll never get back.
The camera has a pair of fish eye lenses - spaced just far enough to simulate the field of view of a typical pair of adult human eyes. Other than some adjustment that had to be done to compensate for the lens shape, there's no need for post processing to produce a proper stereo effect because the lenses are capturing exactly what your eyes should be seeing. You also don't need to worry about positioning yourself out of the camera frame that 360 cameras tend to force you to do - just point and shoot... like a point and shoot.
A 180 degrees field of view doesn't sound like a lot, but it's good enough for me to look about 45 degrees off center in my Daydream View without seeing one of the edges. Unlike 3D cameras, you don't feel like you're seeing a picture that's popping out of a 2D frame - you just feel like you're THERE!
Are there issues with the camera? Sure. Not having a viewfinder on the camera is a huge bummer, but I'm getting used to the idea of just looking somewhere, and placing the cameras right in front of my eyes to shoot when I feel like it's a view worth capturing. It also performs poorly when it's taking low light photos, so for indoor pictures it's best to bring in as much light as possible before shooting. The picture quality also won't compare well to more expensive 360 cameras, but those camera has to deal with stitching issues that just doesn't exist in this format.
With all the caveats out of the way, I am giving this camera a 5 star rating because it is the only VR180 camera in existence at the time I'm writing this review, and it is the only sensible option for everyday people to take realistic VR pictures and videos right now. I firmly believe VR180 is the VR video format of the future, and even with the flaws that it has due to its experimental nature, I'd still easily recommend this camera, no questions asked.
Top reviews from other countries
The camera is small and light enough to fit on my gimbal (for phones) and also has a 1/4" screw hole for mounting on tripod or other gimbals or mounts.
The video quality isn't great even on the highest setting it's very soft and lacking detail but as an introduction to vr video I think it's ok and I'll make some use of it.
