*I don't encourage you to overclock and am not responsible for your results if you do overclock.

This is the sixth i7-based system I have built. The first i7 920 built 2 and a half years ago acheived stunning performance. When Intel came out with these new 6-core 32 nm processors I was curious about their overclocking potential considering it is an older architecture that has been moved to a smaller manufacturing process. My curiosity was rewarded with this purchase. I am currently running this processor at 4.6 ghz, temps are peaking at 60c and it is a couple hours prime stable so far. This is by far the easiest processor I have ever overclocked. I am using liquid cooling which allows for these low temps but I replaced an i7 960 with this cpu and overclocking is tremendously better. With no voltage changes I acheived a 4.2 ghz overclock. If you have been running an older i7 and have been considering an upgrade, this processor is worth it if you can stomach the price.

The only negative part is the price. it's 600 dollars and the core count doesn't double, it only increases to 6 cores, so theoretically you may see a 50% more performance in highly-threaded applications for twice the cost of the 4-core 45 nm i7's. However, it is important to consider also that this is very close performance-wise to a 980x or 990x which are around 1000 USD.

The overclocking performance combined with two more cores makes it a worthwhile upgrade. It really is a beast!

Pros: I built my X58 i7 rig in 2009, starting with the beloved i7-920. Last year I switched it out for an i7-950. Nice improvement. Recently I had to RMA my mobo, and since I was basically rebuilding the PC with a fresh Win7 install, I went for the 980.

WOW.

I see a lot of gripes about the cost, but for double the price of a 950 I am definitely getting a perceived double power of of this thing. It's crazy fast, I use it mostly for video and photo editing as well as MS Flight Sim, and without being able to give you a comparison chart, just know that I feel like I can throw anything at this CPU and it'll laugh. Coupled with a GTX570, Adobe Premiere video editing is pretty much seemless and smooth! (Yes, gamers, ONE vid card, Adobe doesn't know what SLI is).

Get it. Get it. Get it. "Noticable improvement" is an understatement. For the curious, my rig is listed below.
*Please see Notes regarding cooling!*

Cons: Well, anytime you plunk down 600 bucks for anything you kind of wince, bt once you fire up the new rig that all seems to fade away...

Cooling: Two rules: don't mess around with the stock cooler, and don't use too much thermal paste! You're spending 600 bucks for a CPU, spend another 80 & get the Noctua NH-D14. You don't need water cooling if you do your paste right, and you don't want the inferior stock cooler (I saw one reviewer on a different site say he uses the stock cooler & gets 36C idle, 70C under load. I cringed at such high temps). I simply used a half-pea-sized blop of

This was the heart of the liquid cooled system that I helped my son build. Fastest processor known to man at the time we built this monster of a PC. Everything else is standing still next to this!! GREAT Product.

Try as I might, SETI@Home is the only thing I can get to fully utilize all 12 cores, which is awesome. Tragically, it won't work as a space heater either because it doesn't get hot enough.

Couldn't afford the Extreme so I went with this. I overclocked it to 4.2 Ghz on H20 without moving the core voltage at all. Probably could go higher but the temps are <35 degrees on full load and I like rock-solid stable and cool. x58 has very little to offer over the newer chips but I had expensive hardware built around the platform already. Wasn't ready for a full reset quite yet. This chip has given my rig a couple more years of life.
