I love these Optane drives. Yes, they are expensive. In return they have ridiculously low latencies and provide the best computer experience you will ever have.
These drives do not have an extremely high transfer speed. In some situations you might be better served by a PCIe Gen4 SSD with a 6 GBps transfer. These 4x PCIe3 Optane drives top out at a read and write speed of about 2 GBps.
But most computer storage operations go like this: Read block 27. Look at it, find the next location. Read block 992. Look it it. Read block 10,221. Etc. Optane is very, very good at this. Reading many small files, doing database index lookups, etc.
I use mine in a software development workstation. The many small files in a git repository, the many small header files of a C++ build and the many small .o files needed to link a C++ application work great in an Optane drive.
