Intel Technology
45nm Hafnium-Based Architecture. Thanks to a naturally occurring element called Hafnium, Intel engineers were able to shrink the size of new Intel processors and pack more computing technology into less space. The result is improved performance with less energy wastage.

Intel® Wide Dynamic Execution. Enables the delivery of more instructions per clock cycle for shorter execution times and improved energy efficiency—accomplish more simultaneously and with greater efficiency.

Intel® Intelligent Power Capability. Turning off portions of the processor when they aren't being used improves overall energy efficiency and reduces heat production, resulting in a quieter, more energy efficient system.

Intel® Smart Memory Access. Increasing available data bandwidth means more multitasking with less slowdown—run more demanding applications simultaneously and accomplish more in less time.

Intel® Advanced Smart Cache. Placing data closer to the processing cores improves platform responsiveness and performance with a wide range of applications.

Intel® Advanced Digital Media Boost. Accelerates performance with a wide range of applications, including video, gaming, speech and image, photo processing, encryption, financial, engineering and scientific applications.

Intel® HD Boost. Available only on the latest 45nm Intel processors, this revolutionary technology takes Intel® Advanced Digital Media Boost and improves it even further enabling significant gains on the latest SSE4 instruction set. SSE4-optimized applications, such as video editing and encoding in high-definition resolution, will see additional performance improvements

Multimedia
With professional-grade photo, music and HD video editing software readily available for consumers, it's becoming increasingly popular to create, edit, and share entertainment with friends and family. Unfortunately, these same applications are notoriously resource hungry. Built to handle the most demanding software, the four cores of the 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad processor help ensure that when you're working with high-resolution photos, exporting your next audio mashup, or editing HD-quality home movies, your computing platform will be able to keep pace with your creative muse.

Multitasking
A computing platform featuring a new 45nm Intel Core 2 Quad-Core processor maximizes processing efficiency, allowing computer users to juggle multiple projects in multiple applications without experiencing the slowdown typically seen with traditional single-core processors.

Gaming
Next-generation gaming is more than just pretty environments and smooth motion. Behind the incredible visual realism of waterfalls or the unlucky ricochet of a bullet are intense, high-speed calculations of asset streaming, terrain generation, 3D rendering, and physics effects. When running select next-generation games, each of the cores in the Intel Core 2 Quad processor can be dedicated to each of these individual processes, resulting in smoother, more lifelike graphics and further blurring the line between virtual and reality.

This is still by far the best bang for buck processor you can get.
Out the box its at 2.8 so which is more than enough to run pretty much anything faster than any Dual core, yes even the E8400 4Ghz.

The Core is easily overclockable to 3.5Ghz at which point it becomes a whole new level of awesomeness, it'll handle any game like Crysis and run them with no problems or hiccups.

I use my processor mainly for console emulation, to put things into perspective i was running a 4Ghz E8400 and the Q9 clocks out 60fps solid where the E8400 would clock 40-55 unstable.

Testing this versus the i7, the gains from the i7 are negligable as they clock the same times with any programs on the market right now, so dont bother going i7 when till much much later.

Q9 is the processor for you.

This processor is excellent. I have it overclocked to 3.4ghz on standard voltage thanks to a small fsb bump. I have it watercooled and it never exceeds 50c even with heavy use. I have had a million (exaggeration obviously) programs open and running and have never seen this processor utilized more than 50-60%.

Be careful and watch what you are buying. The picture is a retail package but that may not be the case. When I purchased this processor Amazon was chaging the market place vendors several times. I chose Amazon above other vendors because I preferred a retail packaged processor with a full warranty. The vendor I ended up buying from changed the product description after my credit card was charged to an OEM packaged processor with a new official Intel heatsink included. On the positive side they did at least contact me prior to shipping, but would not negotiate to the current market OEM pricing. In the end I told them to ship, but only because the charge had already been made to my account. I don't even use the Intel Heatsink and could have saved $50 buying from another supplier.

I can report that the package was intact and the product works exceptionally.

At $250 it's still a good option to upgrade your older C2D, especially a 65nm part like an E6850 or lower.

I got mine to replace an E8600 C2D I had overclocked at 4ghz. With this quad overclocked to 4ghz it's a nice new level. Paid $200 at the time which is a fairer price. I went from C2D/4gb to C2Quad/8gb for not too much dough and won't need a new PC for another few years.

Took a bit of tweaking to get stable 4ghz 1.38v overclock (Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and 8gb G.Skill ddr2 1066). Using Noctua NH-U12P cooler. Very happy now that I have it dialed in. System is quiet and fast.

Runs great, stays below 60C. 8800GT screams. No CPU bottleneck here. MW2 runs smooth at 1900x1080 maxed out graphics. I sold my GTX280 and don't really miss it, now that I have this cpu to push the 8800GT.

buy an aftermarket cooler if you overclock beyond 3.4ghz (which is easy at stock voltages).

Most people won't need to overclock though.

Make sure your motherboard is good with the 45nm CPU's. Just because it's socket 775 doesn't mean it will work.

If I were doing a new budget build I'd probably choose the i5-750 or a Phenom X4 on AM3 platform.

If you can afford a new mobo, new RAM, AND a high-end SandyBridge i7, this isn't for you.
If you, like me, want to update your 775 system to match most i5s and some i7s with a SINGLE purchase...look no further! I pushed my P4 3.0GHz to its limit(a stable 4.5GHz OC'd), and after 3 years, needed more under the hood. The Q9550 CPU, paired with my same 3 yr old Gigabyte mobo and EVEN OLDER 4GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM(leaving major room for performance boost) is a technical marvel!
PROS:
Installed in 25 minutes. Runs dozens of applications without blinking. Plays Blu-Rays flawlessly on my 40"HDTV in 1080P. The 1 hour 40 minutes I used to spend encoding dvd movies now takes 25 minutes. Plays games in 1080P with all effects enabled. What's not to like?
CONS:
I bought this chip months ago. The price has not dropped nearly as much as it should, with some newer i7s less expensive.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
After conservatively overclocking this chip to 3.9GHz, it still idles 28 degrees, and under 100% load maxes out at 55 degrees...thanks to my 3 yr old Zalman 9500 cpu fan. By far, the Q9550 will be your best PC investment!!!!!

I have been used to an older Intel 550 with 4GB of DDR2. This Quad runs circles around it. I have it clocked a 3.2GHz and it runs stable with stock volts. This chip is less than the Q9450 and it's faster so, don't buy the slow one thinking the price is less than a faster model. Best bang for your dollar is the E8400 or the Q9550. Love it!

I bought this as a CPU upgrade for an existing Dell system. It popped in just fine. I had a small issue with reinstalling the CPU fan but that is an issue with the motherboard and not the CPU. On booting up the computer all 4 cores showed up just fine. I find that Intel process switching is faster than on AMD processors, i.e. when switching between programs AMD processors seem to have more of a lag. I ran benchmarks and some real world programs before and after to gather comparison data. On Windows 7, I would say that going from 2 3.0Ghz cores to 4 2.83Ghz cores nearly doubles user program performance. This is because most of the OS threads do not scale up their CPU usage.

I'm hoping this gives me another 2-3 years of life out of this computer.
