Great processor and great new platform.
This is one of the best processors right now in terms of performance/price/optimization values. If you are building a computer right now and your CPU budget is around $250 - get this one without thinking, but remember that you will need a few more things to compliment it.
First - no cooler included, K processors are intended for overclockers and for stable overclock you can't use stock cooler. This CPU is very efficient and does not produce a lot of heat but you still need something better than stock if you will start cranking up voltage. My recommendations: air - CM Hyper 212 EVO ($30), liquid - Corsair H50 or similar ($60)
Second - you will need Z170 motherboard to take advantage of overclocking possibilities with unlocked multiplier in those K processors.

If you don't need or care about overclocking - consider H170 motherboard and i5 6500 or 6600 processor combo (non-K). It will be cheaper, just as fast on stock clocks (minimal difference) and will come with cooler, plus nearly the same features on H170 compared to Z170 (if you compare good boards, not budget ones).

If you are building computer right now and want to go Intel route - this one is perfect.
If you are thinking about upgrading from one of the previous gen processors - think twice! If you have i5 3xxx or 4xxx series right now - stick with it. You will not see huge performance boosts from this upgrade. Each new generation only brings around 5% higher performance per clock (Intel processors) with some other improvements that are not as visible. But with this upgrade you will have to get new mobo (new socket), new set of RAM (DDR4) and this CPU on top - and all for what? That extra 5% speed boost?

This chip works great, and is $135 cheaper than an i7. Unless you do heavy video encoding or some other app that is heavily dependent on CPU horsepower, you'll never be able to tell the difference. There is no benefit to buying an i7 if you plan to play games and surf Facebook, so just buy this chip and use the spare money to buy a nice Samsung 850 EVO SSD which will make a HUGE difference in your computer's speed.

Great performance. Overclocked to 4.7GHz stable @ 1.41v. Max load temps never exceed 60c on my H105 watercooler. Gaming with this CPU and two 980 TI's is a dream @ 1440P MAX settings

Incredibly smooth, cool, fast, and all around a very nice cpu.
It doesn't bottleneck anything in my system.
I overclocked it to 4.5ghz and it only gets to 65-70C on 100% load.
It Idles at a constant 4.5ghz around 35-40C
The 14NM architecture is amazing at keeping the system cool all the time.

There's a few hundred reviews on this CPU already so adding my voice to the cacophony is just a drop in the bucket. Having gotten that out of the way, I love this CPU. I'm a heavy gamer and avid "power user" and this CPU fits my needs perfectly. I had always been an AMD guy and got tired of always being behind the curve in performance. I went with an Intel+Nvidia build and couldn't be happier. I have my chip currently clocked at 4.4Ghz on liquid cooling and have yet to see temps go above 45C even at full tilt. I'm confident that I have room to move higher on my clock but there's just no need to; I've got plenty of oomph. The CPU can handle everything I've thrown at it and has yet to cause me any issues. (Well, sorta. See below.)

For what it's worth my build uses: i5 6600k, EVGA Classified K, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, EVGA GTX 1070FTW, Samsung EVO 850 SSD, Corsair Hydro 100i GTX, Fractal Design Define S.

Now, the disclaimer: I had to buy two of these because the first one died after 2 days of use. I got a full refund for the defective chip, but the point stands that I got the one-in-a-billion bad CPU. Shortly after my build I was getting strange blue screens, reboot loops, and eventually the computer refused to POST. After a lot of troubleshooting I narrowed it down to the CPU and a new one solved all the issues. It's been working beautifully for more than a month. I'm not holding the bad CPU against my review. I honestly think it was the motherboard I was using that blew the CPU. I found a few reports of other users with the same board saying that the VRMs on that particular board were not reliable/poor quality and overclocking was unstable for that board. That board was replaced with a totally different brand/model while going through my troubleshooting steps.

The i5-6600K is an astounding processor for gaming and is overclock friendly, so don't make the mistake I've been making for years and fall pray to the only-i7 for gaming hype. Unless you're intending to make multiple VMs on your machine or do professional video editing for a living, there is little benefit to buying an i7 for gaming.

Side Note:
There's several reviews claiming the i5-6600K provides a large (10-30) increase in FPS over the "older" i5-4690K while combined with a discrete gpu (970/980 gtx sli/no-sli), but this is false and misleading. Your video games are heavily, almost entirely, GPU bound with little influence from your CPU. The overall core clock speed of your CPU is the biggest factor that holds sway over a games performance. It's not my intention to "out" people, but the claim that this CPU will provide FPS increases is false, especially claims of gains hitting 10-30 fps. Even an i7-2600K Sandy Bridge from 2009 will only falls short by a handful of FPS of current gen i5/i7s when combined with identical discrete GPUs. This whole premise reinforces the idea behind saving ~$100, opting out of the i7, and getting an i5 with the intent of gaming.

However... should you be excited for this CPU? Absolutely, undeniably yes, but not because of the CPU. Your excitement should stem from the fantastic 1151 MoBo Architecture this CPU sits on, and not to go into exhausting detail but, DDR4, USB C/3.1, dedicated 4x pci storage lane, etc, etc.

TL;DR - i5-6600K Perfect for gamers -- increase in FPS over "older" i5/7s is shenaniganz -- be excited for 1151 arch' improvements
